The Mike & Sofia Segal Foundation makes a small number of very large, unrestricted operations grants to institutional recipients, with a strong tilt toward medical research (especially cancer and rare-disease organizations) and selective investments in education and public policy research. Grants are national in scope and support established nonprofits and academic centers rather than grassroots groups, indicating a preference for capacity-building for proven organizations.
A $3.5 million unrestricted operations grant to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society shows the scale and style of the Mike & Sofia Segal Foundation’s giving: concentrated, institutional, and built around a few large checks rather than many small awards. The foundation’s 2025 grants also show a second major medical commitment, with $1.406 million to the Ehlers-Danlos Society and $600,000 to Moffitt Cancer and Research, alongside support for academic and civic institutions. Across the recent grant list, medical research and patient advocacy sit next to Jewish heritage, intellectual freedom, elder care, climate-related work, and education. The recipients are established nonprofits and universities, and the grants are almost entirely operational in purpose, which points to general support for organizations already carrying substantial programs. The foundation’s portfolio includes university-based policy research, youth educational media, and community institutions, but the largest checks are clearly aimed at serious medical conditions and the organizations working on them. That mix makes the foundation legible as a large, selective funder that backs proven organizations in a narrow set of priority areas.
Medical research is a central theme. In 2025, the foundation gave $600,000 to Moffitt Cancer and Research for operations, and $100,000 to Digestive Disease Research Foundation for operations, showing support for both cancer-related and other underfunded health research. Rare-disease work is another clear line: the Ehlers-Danlos Society received $1.406 million for operations. The foundation also funds education and intellectual life. Hetreodox Academy received $1 million for operations, and Constructive Dialogue Institute received $250,000 for operations, tying the grantmaking to civil discourse and academic freedom themes. Educational programming appears as well, with $541,780 to Jigsaw Educational Productions for operations. Cultural and communal support is present through grants such as $300,000 to American Friends of Beit Hatfutsot for operations and $200,000 to Museum of the Jewish Soldier for operations.
The recent grants are highly concentrated at the top: $1.406 million at the 25th percentile, a $300,000 median, and $600,000 at the 75th percentile. Every recent grant listed is for operations, not project-only support. The foundation is a private foundation and a regular funder, and the grant list shows repeat recipients within the same year, including Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The Washington Institute, and Combat Hate Foundation. That pattern suggests sustained relationships rather than one-off awards. The active programs also indicate that it accepts unsolicited inquiries in several areas, including medical research, Jewish heritage, intellectual freedom, elder care, and climate change.
