Charities located outside Palm Beach County, individuals, private foundations, religious or politically affiliated organizations, debt reduction or operating deficits, capital projects, and bridge funding are not eligible. National organizations must apply through a local chapter with a local board of directors and a project or program benefiting Palm Beach County residents.

Projects led by individuals or organizations without nonprofit status must have an eligible fiscal sponsor at the time of application. The foundation does not fund individuals without a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, projects outside arts writing or visual arts journalism, retroactive or completed projects, general operating support unless explicitly invited, or capital campaigns/major infrastructure projects.

New applicants and organizations that have not received a grant in the last three years must contact the Trust before applying to confirm alignment. Organizations that received grants in each of the last two years must take a one-year hiatus before applying. The Trust typically does not fund endowments or annual campaigns, internships or scholarships, national or regional organizations based outside Maine except for projects conducted entirely in Maine, primarily social-service organizations unless the request emphasizes arts, culture or environment, trade schools, school districts, summer-only festivals, or artist residencies unless tied to year-round community programming.
