This family foundation directs its giving almost exclusively to a single local environmental nonprofit in Southwest Florida, underwriting both conservation-related operations and maritime program costs. Grants have funded boat insurance and improvements, survivor support programming, and captain salaries, indicating a focus on sustaining field operations and service delivery rather than broad grantmaking. The foundation appears locally focused and hands-on in supporting practical needs tied to marine conservation and boating activities.
A $95,000 grant to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida for the Good Fortune II boat, survivors programming, and captain salaries shows the foundation’s most distinctive pattern: practical support for marine conservation operations rather than broad, detached philanthropy. Brooks and Joan Fortune Family Foundatio gives across education, arts, outreach, healthcare, community development, environmental conservation, and emergency relief, but the recent record shows a strong preference for project-specific support with defined outcomes. The foundation also appears comfortable funding infrastructure-like needs, from boat insurance and improvements to staff costs tied to vessel-based work. That operational bent sits alongside a broad mix of nonprofit causes. Recent grants include support for scholarship and training programs in the arts, tutoring and school-based support, journalism programming, and community services such as housing assistance and prevention work. Several awards are in the five-figure range, while many others fall in the low-thousands, suggesting a grantmaker that combines anchor gifts with smaller targeted awards. The foundation’s giving is national in scope, with awards going to organizations in Florida, Indiana, New York, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Vermont, Washington, DC, and beyond.
In environmental conservation, the foundation’s clearest recent award was $82,000 to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida for the same Good Fortune II boat insurance, improvements, survivors program, and captain salaries support carried in earlier years. That indicates continued backing for conservation field operations and related service delivery. In arts and cultural education, it gave $50,000 to The Naples Players Inc. for the Academy of Dramatic Arts program scholarships, and another $30,000 to Cellobello Inc. for website redesign. The portfolio also includes $25,000 to The Depot Theater for scholarships and theater programming. Education-related grants include $60,000 to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Inc. for Space Object Matter and $26,000 to The Washington Township Schools Foundation for MSDWT teacher and student support. In community and human services, it awarded $40,000 to Davids Table Inc. for essential housing costs.
