About William T Grant Foundation
William T Grant Foundation Inc. centers its grantmaking on research that can improve the lives of young people, with a particular emphasis on reducing inequality and strengthening how research evidence is used in decisions that affect youth. Its recent awards show a strong mix of field-initiated research, research-practice partnerships, and capacity-building for institutions and intermediaries. A large 2025 grant to The Urban Institute supported work on redesigning the child tax credit to reduce economic inequality through changes to benefits and administration, while a 2025 award to New York University examined disparities in suicidal behaviors among Latinx and LGBTQ+ youth. Other sizable grants point to the foundation’s interest in youth outcomes across education, mental health, family supports, and child welfare. The William T Grant Scholars Program and related mentoring grants also indicate sustained attention to early-career faculty and career development in the social sciences. The foundation funds both universities and nonprofit intermediaries, and its recent portfolio includes projects tied to multilingual learners, Black youth, immigrant students, and school-based systems. These patterns align with a foundation that supports applied social science and partnerships intended to influence policy and practice rather than direct service alone.
What William T Grant Foundation Funds
In reducing inequality, the foundation backed a 2025 project at Santa Clara University on strengthening a community-based pre-collegiate and collegiate support system to improve college matriculation, persistence, and success among Latinx students in East San Jose. It also funded a 2025 Drexel University study on the promise of marijuana legalization to reduce racial disparities in youth legal system contact in New Jersey. On evidence use, a 2025 University of Pittsburgh grant focused on improving the use of research evidence in multilingual learner policy and practice through engagement with state education agency leaders. A 2025 University of South Florida project used discrete event simulation to improve the use and relevance of research evidence for school mental health services. The foundation also supports work on school systems and family supports, including a 2025 Northeastern University grant on community-driven, technology-guided school rezoning to reduce economic segregation.
