    About Food Gatherers

Food Gatherers directs nearly all of its giving through food access and hunger relief work in Washtenaw County, with grants tied to food purchasing, capacity building, and program support for local agencies. One of the clearest signals in the recent record is the $3,169,928 TEFAP Program grant to various USDA grantees, which sits alongside large awards to community-based partners such as Bryant Community Center in Ann Arbor and Hope Medical Clinic in Ypsilanti. The foundation also funds food credit purchases for organizations that distribute food locally, including Community Action Network, Avalon Housing, and several faith-based and service providers across the county. Its programs show a similar pattern: no-cost and low-cost food support for nonprofit agencies, neighborhood grocery initiatives in affordable housing communities, and school-focused food access efforts. Together, the grants and active programs point to a funder built around direct food distribution, partner capacity, and local systems that move food to households, students, and emergency food providers.

    What Food Gatherers Funds

Food Gatherers supports emergency food systems through both direct food funding and partner infrastructure. In 2025, it gave $1,487,194 to Bryant Community Center for capacity building, and in the same year it awarded $1,167,276 to Hope Medical Clinic for capacity building. Food purchasing credits are another recurring tool: the foundation gave $587,780 to Sos Community Services and $437,372 to Avalon Housing for food credit purchase, helping local agencies obtain food for distribution. Child nutrition is also part of the portfolio. Food Gatherers operates the Summer Food Service Program to provide meals to children during summer months, working with schools and community organizations in Washtenaw County. School-based food access appears again in the Healthy School Pantry Program, which supports pantry-style food resources for students and families.

    How Food Gatherers Gives

Food Gatherers’ typical grant size is $16,551 at the 25th percentile, $37,018 at the median, and $106,485 at the 75th percentile. The recent record shows both very large program funding and many mid-sized local awards, with repeat grantees appearing across multiple years, including Monroe County Opportunity Program, Hope Medical Clinic, Bryant Community Center, Sos Community Services, Compassion Ministry of Milan, and Avalon Housing. The foundation is a Pure DAF Provider, funds individuals: false, and makes no program-related investments. Its active programs indicate a mix of direct support for partner agencies, food credit funding, and restricted/project support.
