The foundation does not fund organizations that are not 501(c)(3) nonprofits, capital campaigns, government-mandated projects, political lobbying, general social service organizations, litigation unless it supports the foundations of democracy, research studies including species and habitat studies, religious organizations, hospitals or medical clinics, scholarships, or event sponsorship. Organizations funded five consecutive years should take a year off and secure one new funding source before applying again.
