Committed to advancing the cause of public education and championing justice and excellence for every student and educator.
The largest recent grants go to state education associations for financial assistance, with the California Teachers Association receiving $13,560,103 in 2025 and $11,383,445 in 2024. That pattern points to a funder organized around educator support rather than project-by-project philanthropy. National Education Association of the United States backs state affiliates across the country, and the recent grant list shows repeated financial-assistance awards to organizations such as the Michigan Education Association, New Jersey Education Association, Ohio Education Association, and Pennsylvania State Education Assn. The grantmaking aligns with the group’s stated focus on public education, teacher quality, student success, school funding, racial and social justice, professional development, school health and safety, and union organizing. The 2025 filings also show a very large annual grantmaking footprint, with $389,248,509 given in grants and total assets of $442,991,930. Recent awards are not limited to one year or one recipient: several state associations appear repeatedly, often in consecutive years, suggesting sustained support. The structure and naming also indicate an association-based funder centered on educators and their organizations, rather than one making individual grants or program-related investments.
Financial assistance is the clearest throughline in the recent grants. The California Teachers Association received $13,560,103 in 2025 for financial assistance, while the Michigan Education Association received $7,686,867 in 2023 for the same purpose. Similar awards went to the New Jersey Education Association, Ohio Education Association, and Massachusetts Teachers Association, reinforcing a statewide affiliate model. Support also reaches the middle of the country and the Mid-Atlantic through repeated assistance to Pennsylvania State Education Assn and Maryland State Education Association. Pennsylvania State Education Assn received $5,878,935 in 2025 and $5,362,389 in 2024, while Maryland State Education Association received $3,602,780 in 2025. The grant list includes the State Engagement Fund, which received $6,000,000 in 2023 for financial assistance. That award sits alongside state-association grants and suggests the foundation also supports broader organizing or engagement infrastructure within education.

The recent list shows a much higher pattern for major state-affiliate support, with multiple grants in the millions. Grants recur across years to the same recipients, especially state education associations, which appear in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The foundation is a regular funder, not a DAF, and it does not fund individuals or make program-related investments. Its recent grant records are overwhelmingly transaction-based financial assistance rather than open-ended project grants.
