The Lorraine and Richard Schwarz Family Foundation concentrates its giving exclusively in healthcare, providing general/unrestricted operating support to hospital foundations. Grants are targeted and substantial relative to the portfolio, directed to established regional health systems rather than small clinics or disease-specific research. The foundation appears to prefer sustaining broad patient-care capacity and institutional flexibility through unrestricted donations.
The Lorraine and Richard Schwarz Family Foundation’s recent giving is anchored by repeated unrestricted support for health-system foundations, led by Northwell Health Foundation in New Hyde Park, New York, which received four grants between 2023 and 2026. That pattern is echoed across other hospital and health organizations, with Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation in Sarasota, The St Francis Hospital Foundation Inc in Roslyn, and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore also appearing in the recent-grants list. The foundation’s grants are often general and unrestricted, giving recipient institutions flexibility rather than tying dollars to a single project. Its portfolio also reaches beyond hospital philanthropy into a small set of other causes, including Alzheimer’s-related programming through Hilarity for Charity, emergency help for an individual grantee, and support for food access, scholarships, and community organizations. Across the recent data, the foundation makes grants at a range of sizes, but the repeated presence of multi-year gifts to the same health institutions suggests a sustained relationship model rather than one-off philanthropy. The result is a grant pattern centered on institutional support, with healthcare remaining the clearest thread through the foundation’s giving.
Healthcare is the clearest giving area in the recent record. The foundation gave $50,000 in 2024, $50,000 in 2023, $50,000 in 2025, and $30,000 in 2026 to Northwell Health Foundation for general and unrestricted support, and it also made repeated unrestricted grants to Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation in Sarasota. Its support also touches specialty health and care-related work. Hilarity for Charity received $23,000 in 2026, $14,000 in 2024, $14,000 in 2023, and $7,000 in 2025 for general and unrestricted support. The St Francis Hospital Foundation Inc in Roslyn received several unrestricted gifts as well as a $5,000 grant in 2024 for the Clinical Scholar Program. Beyond healthcare institutions, the foundation has given to Island Harvest Ltd in Melville for general and unrestricted support, showing some interest in food access and community assistance.
Typical grant size is modest to mid-sized, with a p25 of $1,000, a median of $2,000, and a p75 of $14,000. The recent record shows both recurring and one-time grants: several recipients appear in multiple years, including Northwell Health Foundation, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, The St Francis Hospital Foundation Inc, Hilarity for Charity, Hermitage Artist Retreat Inc, and Maine Mineral & Gem Museum. The foundation’s giving is structured as straightforward grants, often labeled general and unrestricted, with some designated support such as the Clinical Scholar Program and short-term emergency assistance. It also funds individuals, including a short-term emergency assistance grant to G Reiter.
