The John H. and Regina K. Scully Foundation concentrates its giving in two clear areas: arts/media and Bay Area K–12 education. A majority of dollars flow to a small number of repeat recipients, with very large, transformative gifts for both creative production and school facilities/programs. The foundation appears to favor capital and program support that builds organizational capacity rather than a high volume of small grants.
A defining feature of the John H and Regina K Scully Foundation formerly Scully Memorial Foundation is its repeated use of very large general-support grants, especially to Artemis Rising Foundation, which received four grants between 2023 and 2025, including two at $25,000,000. That pattern points to a funder that backs a small set of organizations with substantial, sustained capital. Another core relationship is with Making Waves Foundation and Making Waves Academy in Richmond, where the foundation has funded construction and general support across multiple years at amounts ranging from $335,004 to $12,945,000. The foundation’s recent giving also reaches arts and media through Creative Visions Foundation, Fractured Atlas, Liberty Science Center, and the Academy Musuem Foundation, while still supporting education organizations such as KIPP Bay Area Schools and iMentor. Its grants include general operating support, construction, programming, and legacy funding, suggesting a mix of institutional support and project-specific backing. The overall picture is of a national funder with a concentrated portfolio and recurring relationships rather than a broad, high-volume grantmaking style.
Arts and media are a major thread in the foundation’s grantmaking. In 2025, it gave $250,000 to Creative Visions Foundation for general support and $100,000 to Liberty Science Center for Train Exhibition. It also awarded $100,000 to Fractured Atlas for general support, indicating support for cultural production and presentation. On the education side, the foundation gave $200,000 to KIPP Bay Area Schools for general support and $100,000 to iMentor for general support in both 2023 and 2025. Community and social-service work appears as well: Good Plus Foundation received $100,000 in 2024 for The Academy Training for Social Workers, while Pamoja Initiative received $100,000 in 2025 for general support. The portfolio also includes issue-specific support such as $250,000 to Amalgamated Charitable Foundation for Rhizome Food & Farming.
Grant sizes are highly polarized. The typical grant is $25,000 at the 25th percentile, $50,000 at the median, and $500,000 at the 75th percentile, but the recent list also includes multimillion-dollar awards. The foundation is a regular funder rather than a DAF and makes grants nationally. Its pattern favors repeat recipients: Artemis Rising Foundation, Making Waves Foundation, Making Waves Academy, and iMentor each appear more than once across the recent grants list. The mix of general support, construction, and program-restricted funding shows a preference for flexible, institution-building grants alongside targeted project support.
