The Rice Family Foundation concentrates its giving on a small number of large, national organizations, with a clear emphasis on reproductive health/rights and public media. Nearly all giving is directed to prominent national institutions rather than local grassroots groups. The foundation makes sizable, repeat grants (notably to Planned Parenthood) alongside a major gift to public broadcasting.
Concentrated giving: few, large multi-thousand-dollar grants to national institutions; repeat major support to the same lead grantee (Planned Parenthood) rather than many small or geographically dispersed grants.
The Rice Family Foundation C/o Citrin Cooperman Advisors LLC has made reproductive health and rights a defining part of its grantmaking, including repeated six-figure support for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Center for Reproductive Rights. Those grants sit alongside another clear priority: public broadcasting and civic education, highlighted by a $500,000 gift to Weta (Washington Public Tv). The foundation’s recent giving pattern shows a preference for established national organizations and institutions with broad reach rather than a dispersed portfolio of small local awards. In the latest grants list, that includes Doctors Without Borders, the Aclu Foundation, the Brennan Center for Justice, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and major cultural and educational institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History and New York University. Across these recipients, the common thread is general support, suggesting flexible funding for core operations rather than tightly restricted project grants. The foundation also supports legal advocacy, medical relief, higher education, and museums, but its most visible identity comes from sustained backing for sexual and reproductive health organizations and public media.
In reproductive health and family planning advocacy, the foundation gave $400,000 in 2025 to Planned Parenthood Federation of America for general support, following similar support in 2024 and 2023. It also backed the Center for Reproductive Rights with $300,000 in 2025 and $300,000 in 2024, both listed as general support. Beyond that core area, the foundation supported public broadcasting with a $500,000 grant to Weta (Washington Public Tv) for general purposes. Its civic and legal portfolio includes $105,000 to the Aclu Foundation in 2025 and $100,000 to the Brennan Center for Justice in 2025, each for general support. The foundation also gave $150,000 to New York University in 2025, showing an education component within the broader mix.
Typical grant size centers on larger awards: the 25th percentile is $8,000, the median is $25,000, and the 75th percentile is $60,000. The recent grants list also shows repeated support to the same organizations over multiple years, especially Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the Center for Reproductive Rights, Doctors Without Borders, the American Museum of Natural History, the Brennan Center for Justice, the Aclu Foundation, and The Hastings Center. The foundation is classified as a regular funder, not a donor-advised fund, and it does not make program-related investments or grants to individuals. Most awards are recorded as general support or general, consistent with flexible, non-project-specific funding.
