Helping You Change Lives
The New York Community Trust’s recent giving includes a $12.2 million general-support grant to Yale University and an $11.6 million program-support grant to Northwell Health Foundation, showing a portfolio that reaches across higher education, health, and public purposes. The trust also made seven-figure grants to Columbia University, Environmental Defense Fund, and The Johns Hopkins University, alongside support for arts, housing, justice, and LGBTQ+ work in New York. That mix fits a community foundation with a regional footprint and a broad set of active program areas rather than a single-issue funder. The grant list shows support for both institutions and intermediaries, including Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and Open to Debate Foundation, as well as direct operating or program support for nonprofits such as The Viscardi Center, Central Park Conservancy, and Sanctuary for Families. The trust also funds individual awards: Dartmouth College appears for both program support and a scholarship award, and Beyond the Boroughs received a scholarship award. Leadership Fellows indicates that the trust also supports paid fellowship placements for nonprofit leadership development. Across the recent grants, the pattern is one of diversified support for organizations, students, and early-career professionals.
In health and behavioral health, The New York Community Trust gave $11.6 million to Northwell Health Foundation for program support and $702,000 to Sanctuary for Families Inc. for program support, linking health-oriented grantmaking with service providers in the city. Its education-related giving includes $6.4 million to Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York for program support and $1.1 million to Trustees of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism for program support. In public schools, The Fund for Public Schools Inc. received $1.1 million, and New Visions for Public Schools Inc. received $583,871. The trust also supports environmental work: Environmental Defense Fund Incorporated received $3.1 million for general support, National Audubon Society Inc. received $2.1 million for program support, and The Johns Hopkins University received $2.4 million for research. Arts and civic culture appear as well, with Manhattan Theatre Club Inc. receiving $1.2 million for program support and Open to Debate Foundation receiving $1.3 million for general support.
