The MacMillan Family Foundation appears to concentrate its philanthropy on high-impact biomedical research, demonstrated by a single large general-purpose grant to the New York Genome Center. The foundation’s giving suggests a preference for supporting research infrastructure and institutional capacity in genomics, likely focused on major, city-based research centers rather than many small local projects.
Highly concentrated: one very large, one-off general-purpose award to a single grantee, indicating preference for major institutional investments rather than many small or diversified grants.
A $5 million general-purpose grant to the New York Genome Center anchored The Macmillan Family Foundation Inc’s latest giving and points to a strong interest in biomedical research infrastructure. The foundation also made a $1.6 million general-purpose grant to Columbia University and a $1.075 million general-purpose grant to the Institute for Advanced Study, showing support for major research institutions rather than project-specific awards. In the same grant cycle, it extended seven-figure general-purpose support to Princeton Healthcare System Foundation, Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research. Beyond research, the portfolio includes education, health, youth development, arts, and community institutions. Grants to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation, Center for Supportive Schools, and Target ALS show a mix of medical and educational priorities, while support for School of American Ballet, Central Park Conservancy, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art indicates continued backing for cultural organizations. The pattern is broad in institutional terms, but the grant purposes remain consistent: general-purpose support for established nonprofits and research bodies.
In biomedical science, the foundation gave $5 million to New York Genome Center Inc for general purpose support and $1 million to The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research for the same purpose, underscoring a preference for large research organizations. It also gave $230,000 to Life Sciences Research Foundation, extending support to the research pipeline. Education and youth-serving work appears as another thread. The foundation awarded $500,000 to Center for Supportive Schools and $250,000 to Partnership With Children, both for general purpose support. It also gave $200,000 to Counseling in Schools and $200,000 to City Year New York. Arts and civic institutions also receive funding. Grants include $325,000 to School of American Ballet, $250,000 to Joyce Theatre Foundation Inc, $200,000 to Metropolitan Museum of Art, and $200,000 to The Apollo Theater Foundation Inc, all listed as general purpose support.
The recent grant list is dominated by large, unrestricted awards: one $5 million grant, several in the $1 million to $1.6 million range, and many additional grants in the $200,000 to $575,000 range. The foundation is a private foundation and a regular funder, not a DAF sponsor. The pattern shown in the file is largely one-time giving in 2025, with grants labeled general purpose rather than tied to a formal application process or project cycle. The recipients are institutional organizations rather than individuals.
