About Lucille Lortel Foundation
The Lucille Lortel Foundation Inc directs its giving almost entirely to Off-Broadway theatre, with grants tied to the Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation and the Lortel Awards. One recent award totaled $8,867,451 in 2024 for support operations and the awards program, showing that the foundation’s largest commitments are built around sustaining theatre infrastructure and recognition rather than broad charitable diversification. A second major grant of $1,000,000 in 2023 was designated for capital improvements, reinforcing the same theater-centered pattern. Beyond those large operating and capital grants, the foundation also supports the development pipeline that feeds New York theatre. Its recent grants include funding for new play and musical development, writer-focused programs, and theatre education initiatives. Recipients range from established producing organizations to colleges and theatre centers connected to training, workshop production, and artist support. The picture that emerges is a funder with a tightly defined mission: backing the institutions, programs, and recognition mechanisms that keep New York theatre production active. The foundation’s grant history also shows repeat support for the same core organizations, especially within New York City and the surrounding theatre ecosystem. That consistency matters for researchers looking at funders that combine operating support, program funding, and selective project grants within a single artistic field.
What Lucille Lortel Foundation Funds
In Off-Broadway and theatre-organization support, the foundation gave $20,000 to Dramatists Guild Foundation for Writers Alliance Grants and $10,000 to New York Stage and Film for the NOW Program. Those grants point to a priority on writer support and new-work pipelines. Its theatre-development funding also reaches producing institutions. Hartford Stage Company received $15,000 in 2023 and again in 2024 for its New Play Development Program, while Long Wharf Theatre received $15,000 in each of those years for the same purpose. Yale Repertory Theatre was awarded $10,000 in both 2023 and 2024 for the Binger Center for New Theatre. The foundation also backs training and access programs. Bennington College’s Lucille Lortel Foundation Fellowship in Theatre is a five-month internship-style fellowship in New York City, and the High School Playwriting Fellowship serves New York City public high school students with mentorship and workshops.
