The Coleman Foundation focuses its giving on a small set of large, strategic investments concentrated in New York-area health institutions and high-impact child- and community-serving organizations. Grants are often multi‑million-dollar and repeated over time, directed at major hospitals (cancer and surgical care) and scaled anti-poverty/education efforts that deliver cradle-to-career services. The foundation also funds intermediary/philanthropic vehicles to amplify or pool capital for broader social impact. Overall, its portfolio emphasizes deep, institution-level support rather than many small community grants.
The Chase and Stephanie Coleman Foundation’s recent grantmaking shows a repeated commitment to large, multi-year support for New York institutions and a smaller set of community-scale intermediaries. The largest recent award in the file was $3,035,500 to New York Presbyterian Fund Inc for medical work, alongside a continuing three-year series of $2,857,142 grants to Blue Meridian Partners Inc. That combination points to a funder that backs both major health systems and pooled vehicles for broader social impact. Medical institutions make up a visible share of the portfolio. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center received grants in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and Hospital for Special Surgery also appears across multiple years. On the community side, Harlem Children’s Zone received grants in 2023 through 2025 at nearly $1.9 million each year, showing sustained support for cradle-to-career programming. The foundation also includes education and environmental grants in its recent activity, but the pattern is less about many small awards and more about recurring, strategically sized commitments to a limited set of organizations. Its latest 990 year on file is 2025, and its annual grants total $61,084,304 against assets of $374,327,766.
Health care is a central theme. In 2025, the foundation gave $3,035,500 to New York Presbyterian Fund Inc for medical work, and it followed with $2,030,000 to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the same year. Hospital for Special Surgery also received $1,610,000 in 2025, showing continued support for specialty care institutions. Child and youth development is another clear lane. Harlem Children’s Zone received $1,916,668 in 2025 for community work, after comparable grants in 2024 and 2023. The foundation also supported Brilliant Detroit with a $500,000 grant in 2025. Its education-related grants include $1,280,000 to American Friends of the Royal Foundation in 2024 and $500,000 to Promise Venture Studio in 2025. Environmental funding appears through The Earthshot Prize and Greenwave Organization, with grants of $1,267,594 and $525,000, respectively.
Typical grant size is $2,500 at the 25th percentile, $25,000 at the median, and $100,000 at the 75th percentile, though the recent file also contains several multi-million-dollar awards. Recurring support is a defining feature: Blue Meridian Partners Inc, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Harlem Children’s Zone, and Hospital for Special Surgery each appear across multiple years. The foundation is classified as a regular funder, not a DAF, and it does not fund individuals or make program-related investments. The grant pattern suggests a mix of project-based and sustained institutional support, with repeated commitments to a small group of recipients rather than one-off giving.
