The Samuel and Helene Soref Foundation concentrates its giving on Jewish communal life and organizations connected to U.S.–Middle East policy. It makes a small number of sizable grants, frequently repeating support to the same institutions (notably community foundations and federations) and using donor-advised vehicles alongside direct program grants. Their support is both local (Greater Los Angeles Jewish institutions) and policy-focused through a major Near East policy think tank.
Concentrated, high-dollar giving to a handful of repeat grantees—mix of donor-advised fund donations and multi-grant program support rather than many small, one-off gifts.
The Samuel and Helene Soref Foundation’s recent giving is defined by repeat support for Jewish communal institutions and U.S.–Middle East policy organizations, with one of its largest current grants going to the Jewish Federation of Greater La for $135,000 in 2025. The foundation also uses donor-advised vehicles as part of its grantmaking, including grants to the Jewish Community Foundation and the Jewish Communal Fund. Across the recent grants list, the same institutions appear in multiple years, suggesting a steady pattern rather than isolated awards. Its portfolio includes local Jewish communal programming in Los Angeles, national Jewish philanthropy infrastructure, and policy research in Washington, DC. The Washington Institute for Near East Policy received $100,000 in 2023, $100,000 in 2024, and $105,000 in 2025, showing a recurring commitment to that organization. Other recent awards extend to Jewish education, advocacy, humanitarian support, and selected community services, all within a U.S.-only grant footprint.
A core theme is Jewish communal infrastructure. The foundation gave $110,000 to the Jewish Community Foundation in 2023 and another $110,000 in 2024 as donor-advised fund grants, then $100,000 in 2025 for the same category. It also supported the Jewish Communal Fund with $50,000 in 2023, $50,000 in 2024, and $60,000 in 2025. Another clear area is policy and advocacy. J Street Education Fund received $25,000 in 2023, and the Washington Institute for Near East Policy was funded across three consecutive years. The foundation also supports Jewish education and community organizations: American Jewish University received $50,000 in 2023, $25,000 in 2024, and $26,800 in 2025, while Jewish World Watch received grants in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Typical grants are in the mid-thousands to low tens of thousands, with p25 at $2,625, a median of $6,000, and p75 at $15,000. The recent grant list also shows a smaller number of larger awards, including six-figure grants. Several recipients appear across multiple years, pointing to recurring support rather than one-time giving. The foundation is a regular funder and also uses donor-advised fund grants alongside program and operations support. It does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments.
