The Richard S Shineman Foundation appears focused on supporting local hunger-relief efforts in Central New York, providing substantial unrestricted operating support to strengthen service capacity. Its sole reported grant is a large, multi-year pledge to the Food Bank of Central New York, indicating a priority on immediate community needs and organizational sustainability rather than project-specific funding.
Highly concentrated: a single large, multi-year pledge to one local organization. Emphasis on unrestricted/general operating funding rather than numerous small or project-specific grants.
A $200,000, two-year pledge to the Food Bank of Cny stands out in the Richard S Shineman Foundation’s recent record and points to a pattern of flexible support for local nonprofits carrying essential community services. The foundation’s giving centers on Central New York, with recurring awards to organizations that address hunger relief, health access, education, and community stability. In the recent grants list, the largest awards also include $150,000 to Oswego Health Foundation for renovation of pediatric psychiatry rooms and $100,000 to SUNY Oswego Endowment, showing support for both immediate social needs and local institutional capacity. Other sizable grants to Oswego College Foundation, Centerstate CEO Oswego Renaissance Association, and Human Concerns reinforce a preference for organizations rooted in Oswego County and nearby communities. The pattern is not limited to one sector: grants also reach workforce, youth, and neighborhood-serving nonprofits, usually in the form of general operating support. Across the data, the foundation appears to favor organizations that can use unrestricted funding to maintain services, staff, and core operations.
Food security and basic needs are a clear priority. The foundation gave $200,000 to Food Bank of Cny for a two-year pledge, and it also awarded $63,290 to United Way of Greater Oswego County for general operating support. Health-related giving is another visible area: Oswego Health Foundation received $150,000 for renovation of pediatric psychiatry rooms, and Connextcare received $73,000 for school-based healthcare. Education and career pathways also appear in the portfolio. On-point for College received $75,000 for career pathways in Oswego County, while Citi Boces received $50,400 and The Research Foundation for SUNY received $75,000 and $50,000 in separate grants. Community development shows up through $100,000 awards to Centerstate CEO Oswego Renaissance Association and Centerstate CEO Fulton Block Builders, both listed as general operating support.
Typical grant size is modest but with a wide upper range: p25 is $500, median is $2,000, and p75 is $25,000. The recent grants list shows repeated support to the same organizations across multiple years, including Oswego College Foundation, Oswego Health Foundation, The Research Foundation for SUNY, and Centerstate CEO Foundation, which suggests ongoing relationships rather than isolated awards. Most grants are described as general operating support, with some specific-purpose or pledge funding appearing at the high end. The foundation also uses multiple grant programs, including Community Impact Grants, Strategic Grants, and Community Enrichment Grants, with some requests requiring consultation and an LOI.
