The Rattner Family Foundation concentrates its giving in a small number of large, institution-level grants that prioritize elite health care, civic leadership/public affairs, and international refugee advocacy. It funds well-known national organizations rather than grassroots groups, suggesting a preference for high-profile institutions with clear public impact. The foundation’s grants are sizable and targeted rather than broadly distributed across many beneficiaries.
Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a few national institutions; repeated support appears focused on prominent organizations rather than many small awards.
The Rattner Family Foundation Inc C/o Rattner Family Office shows a strong pattern of large, institution-level support for health care, civic leadership, and public-interest organizations. Its biggest recent grant was $650,000 to The Hospital for Special Surgery Fund Inc in New York for general support, pointing to a clear preference for major organizations with broad operating needs. That same pattern appears in civic and policy giving: the foundation gave $300,000 to The Obama Foundation in 2023 and another $300,000 to the Barack Obama Foundation in 2025, both aimed at supporting the organizations’ missions. It also backed international advocacy through Refugees International, with grants of $175,000 in 2023 and $125,000 in 2025. Beyond these anchors, the portfolio includes universities, cultural institutions, and community-focused organizations, but the grant sizes show a selective approach centered on established nonprofits. The recent record suggests a funder that favors general support and mission support over restricted project funding, with giving concentrated in a relatively small number of recipients.
In health care, the foundation supported The Hospital for Special Surgery Fund Inc with $650,000 for general support, its largest recent grant. In civic leadership and public affairs, it gave $100,000 to the Aspen Institute in 2025 and $100,000 to the National Democratic Institute in 2023, then repeated the National Democratic Institute at $100,000 in 2025. For foreign policy and human rights work, Refugees International received $175,000 in 2023 and $125,000 in 2025. The portfolio also includes education and scholarship-linked institutions such as Harvard University, Brown University, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, showing that the foundation funds across institutional sectors rather than one narrow program line.
The typical grant size is modest relative to the foundation’s larger awards: p25 is $2,500, the median is $6,666, and p75 is $25,000. The recent record also shows a small set of much larger institutional grants, including seven-figure-scale giving over multiple years concentrated among repeat recipients. Several grantees recur in 2023 and 2025, including Refugees International, the National Democratic Institute, Harvard University, the Council on Foreign Relations, and Sheriff's Meadow Foundation. The foundation is classified as a regular funder, does not fund individuals, and does not make program-related investments. Grant descriptions commonly use general support or tax-exempt mission language, consistent with flexible operating support.
