MUFG Union Bank Foundation concentrates on economic mobility and neighborhood revitalization, primarily funding entrepreneurship, small-business support, affordable housing, and community development organizations—largely in California and especially Southern California/Orange County. Grants are often provided as general operating or unrestricted support to capacity-building intermediaries, community development corporations, colleges, and workforce/financial capability programs. The foundation favors organizations that advance minority supplier development, microenterprise, and community-based housing solutions.
A $1,754,000 general operating grant to See Attached anchors Mufg Union Bank Foundation Ag’s recent record, and it also signals a grantmaker that uses large operating support alongside many smaller awards. The foundation funds economic mobility and neighborhood revitalization, with a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship, small-business support, affordable housing, and community development organizations. Its recent grants show a mix of capacity-building intermediaries, community-based lenders, workforce and financial capability groups, colleges, and place-based nonprofits. Several of the foundation’s largest 2023 grants went to California organizations working on these themes. Operation Hope received $200,000, while Southwestern College Foundation (cawbcn) received $115,000. Other notable awards supported California Association for Microenterprise Opportunity, Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center, California Capital Financial Development Corporation, Founders First Cdc, The Trust for Public Land, University of Southern California, Community Housingworks, and Western Regional Minority Supplier Development. The pattern suggests a funder that backs organizations positioned to strengthen business ownership, supplier development, and neighborhood-level housing and development work, often through unrestricted or general operating support.
The foundation’s entrepreneurship and microenterprise support is visible in grants to California Association for Microenterprise Opp for $100,000 and Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center for $60,000. It also supported California Capital Financial Development Corporation with $57,000, pointing to an interest in organizations that expand small-business access and financial development tools. Education and training appear as another thread. Network for Teaching Enterpreneurship- Nfte received $40,000, Santa Ana College received $45,000, and Telacu Education Foundation received $45,000. These grants align with youth and adult pathways into business, skills, and economic opportunity. In housing and neighborhood revitalization, the foundation gave $50,000 each to Community Housingworks and Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, and $40,000 to Eah Housing. It also funded The Trust for Public Land with $50,000, showing support for community development and land-related public benefit work.
