The Lostand Foundation concentrates large, multi-year unrestricted gifts to a small number of mission-driven organizations, with a strong interest in contemplative/spiritual practice, arts institutions, and land conservation. The foundation repeatedly supports the Garrison Institute and its international arm, while also funding major arts organizations and strategic conservation projects like boreal land stewardship. Grants are typically general operating or program-support in nature, suggesting trust in institutional leadership and long-term partnerships.
Lostand Foundation C/o Jonathan F P Rose repeatedly makes large, multi-year gifts to a small circle of organizations rather than spreading grants widely. The clearest throughline is sustained support for the Garrison Institute, which receives the foundation’s largest recent awards and appears in multiple forms of support, including program support, general support, and unrestricted grants. That pattern points to a funder that favors long relationships and flexible funding. Alongside contemplative and mindfulness work, the foundation backs arts institutions and place-based conservation. Recent grants include support for Dia Center for the Arts, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Boreal Wildlands Project and fund for land stewardship. The giving profile also reaches into religious and educational support, with grants to Bhutan Foundation, Druk Ralung Shedrup, Yale University, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The foundation’s grantmaking sits in a range from small awards to seven-figure commitments, but the recurring pattern is targeted institutional support rather than broad dispersed funding. Its recent history shows repeated awards to the same organizations across years, often in unrestricted or general-support forms.
Contemplative practice is a central theme. The foundation gave $1,288,863 to Garrison Institute for program support in 2024 and $1,011,774 for general support in 2025, while also backing Garrison Institute International with $650,000 in 2024. The same area includes support for The Mindfulness Initiative, which received $100,000 in 2023 and $75,000 in 2024. Arts funding is another clear thread. Lostand Foundation C/o Jonathan F P Rose supported Dia Center for the Arts with $210,000 in 2024 and $200,000 in 2023, and it gave Brooklyn Academy of Music $100,000 in 2024 plus $75,000 in both 2024 and 2023 for cinema and gala support. The foundation also funds conservation and religious institutions. It awarded $1,000,000 to Nature Conservancy of Canada for the Boreal Wildlands Project and fund for land stewardship, and it supported Druk Ralung Shedrup with $50,000 in 2024 for monastery support.
Typical grant sizes cluster at $1,000 at the 25th percentile, $2,500 at the median, and $14,056 at the 75th percentile, while a few awards rise much higher. The pattern suggests a foundation that combines many modest grants with a handful of very large institutional commitments. Recipients also appear across multiple years, including repeated support for the same organizations in consecutive filings. The foundation’s grants are mostly operating-style or unrestricted, with some project, building, and campaign support mixed in. It also funds individuals, according to the profile data.
