The Joia Foundation concentrates its philanthropic dollars on health and crisis-response organizations while also supporting racial, LGBTQ and criminal-justice reform groups and local safety-net services in the Boston/Metrowest region. A single large commitment to global health and service delivery (Partners In Health) dominates its portfolio, complemented by repeated smaller grants to hospitals, legal advocacy groups, youth crisis services and emergency food/housing providers. The foundation favors both global emergency response and local direct-service/social-justice partners, often funding the same organizations across multiple grants.
A $3.5 million program-support grant to Partners in Health in 2024 is the clearest marker of Joia Foundation Inc C/o Eisneramper’s giving. That commitment, paired with a $1 million grant to the same organization in 2023, shows a foundation willing to make very large bets alongside a wider mix of smaller targeted grants. Its portfolio reaches from global public health and health delivery to Boston-area hospitals, LGBTQ legal advocacy, criminal-justice reform, and local crisis services in the Boston/Metrowest region. The foundation’s recent giving also includes repeated support for Children’s Hospital Corporation, Brown University, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Inc, and community organizations serving food, housing, and youth-crisis needs. Legal-advocacy and justice groups appear as well, including Glbtq Legal Advocates & Defenders Inc (dba Glad), Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund Inc, The Bail Project Inc, NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund Inc, and Equal Justice Initiative. The pattern suggests a funder that combines a dominant global health relationship with a steady set of local and issue-based partners, often revisiting the same organizations across years.
In health and care delivery, the foundation supported Children’s Hospital Corporation (dba Boston Children’s Hospital) with $100,000 in both 2023 and 2024, and Dana-farber Cancer Institute Inc with $50,000 in 2024. Those grants sit alongside its large commitment to global health. In crisis-response and basic-needs work, it gave $20,000 to World Central Kitchen Inc in both 2023 and 2024, plus $20,000 each year to Natick Service Council Inc and Family Promise Metrowest Inc. These awards point to an interest in food, housing, and local safety-net services. On the rights and justice side, the foundation supported Glbtq Legal Advocates & Defenders Inc (dba Glad) with $20,000 in both 2023 and 2024, and also funded The Bail Project Inc, Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund Inc, NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund Inc, and Equal Justice Initiative.
