The Isaac J Chehebar Charitable Trust concentrates on supporting Sephardic Jewish community needs in Brooklyn, with a strong emphasis on direct human services—particularly food assistance—and funding for community organizations that serve cultural and communal ties. Grants are targeted and purposeful, supporting a small number of locally focused Jewish nonprofits rather than broad, national causes.
Concentrated, high-dollar giving to a very small set of recipients with at least one repeated grantee; funding is local and mission-specific rather than broadly diversified across sectors.
Isaac J Chehebar Charitable Trust Isaac J Chehebar Trustee gives through general operating support to Sephardic Jewish community institutions, with the clearest recurring pattern centered on food assistance and community services in Brooklyn and nearby Jewish communities. The largest recent grant listed is $156,000 to Sephardic Food Fund Inc in 2023, followed by $105,000 to the same organization in 2025, showing repeated backing for a food-support provider rather than one-time project funding. Other substantial grants go to community-serving organizations such as Kesher Organization Inc in North Bergen and Sbh Community Services Network in Brooklyn, both funded for general operating support. The trust also supports synagogues, schools, and heritage organizations, including Yeshivt Magen Abraham, Torah Learning Resources Ltd, and the Sephardic Heritage Museum. Across the recent grants list, the pattern is directed and local: support for organizations tied to Sephardic communal life, emergency aid, and continuity of services. The foundation’s grantmaking is measured in relatively small-to-mid-sized awards, but it also includes several larger operating grants for core community institutions.
Food assistance is a central theme. The trust gave $156,000 to Sephardic Food Fund Inc in 2023 and another $105,000 in 2025, both for general operating support. It also supported The Sephardic Bikur Holim Fund in Memory of Joseph D Beyda with $26,504 in 2025, which points to aid connected to health and welfare needs within the community. Community infrastructure is another clear area: $50,000 went to Sbh Community Services Network in 2025, and $26,000 went to Gesher Yehuda in Brooklyn the same year, both as unrestricted support. Religious and educational institutions also appear repeatedly, including $45,000 to Yeshivt Magen Abraham and $30,000 to Torah Learning Resources Ltd in Brooklyn. Cultural preservation shows up in the $22,600 grant to the Sephardic Heritage Museum.
Typical awards are small to modest: the reported distribution is p25 $1,000, median $1,800, and p75 $7,500. The grant list also shows a handful of larger operating grants, including six-figure support to Sephardic Food Fund Inc and $100,000 to Kesher Organization Inc in 2023. The trust appears to make recurring grants to some recipients across multiple years, including Sephardic Food Fund Inc, Kol Yaakov Inc, and Ilan Lael. Nearly all awards in the recent list are for general operating support, aligning with core capacity and service continuity funding. The foundation is structured as a charitable trust with a named trustee, and the data does not show an individual-grant program.
