The Egan Family Charitable Foundation concentrates its giving on higher education—largely Catholic-affiliated colleges—and selective youth services in the New England region. Grants are significant and general-purpose, indicating flexible support for operating needs at a small set of institutions rather than many targeted program grants. The foundation appears comfortable making multi-year or repeat gifts to favored colleges while also supporting local youth development organizations.
General operating grants to a small set of colleges and Rhode Island community institutions define the Egan Family Charitable Foundation C/o Choate LLP’s recent giving. The foundation’s largest disclosed awards go to Boys and Girls Club of Newport County and Fairfield University, both funded at six-figure levels, alongside similarly sized grants to Villanova University and Providence College. That pattern points to a portfolio built around flexible support rather than tightly restricted project funding. Catholic higher education appears prominently in the mix, with Providence College and Regis College both appearing more than once in the recent grants list. Independent universities also receive support, including Fairfield University and Villanova University. Outside higher education, the foundation backs Newport-area civic and youth-serving organizations such as Redwood Library, Church Community Housing Corp Newport, and St Michael's Country Day School. The grant descriptions are consistently marked GENERAL, reinforcing the impression of unrestricted support across a concentrated set of recipients. The portfolio is regional rather than national, with most giving landing in New England and a notable cluster in coastal Rhode Island. Recent awards show repeat grants to several institutions across multiple years, suggesting ongoing relationships rather than one-time awards. Across the file, the foundation combines higher education, youth development, and local community institutions in a selective grantmaking pattern.
Catholic higher education is one of the clearest themes in the foundation’s recent grants. Providence College received $400,000 in 2023 and $300,000 in 2024, followed by $100,000 in 2025, while Regis College received $156,000 in 2023 and $50,000 in 2025. Independent universities are also part of the portfolio. Fairfield University received $200,000 in 2023, $100,000 in 2024, and $500,000 in 2025, and Villanova University received $468,000 in 2025. These grants are all marked GENERAL, indicating flexible support. Youth and community services appear in coastal Rhode Island. Boys and Girls Club of Newport County received $524,300 in 2024, $183,000 in 2025, and $130,000 in 2023. The same region also saw support for Church Community Housing Corp Newport and St Michael's Country Day School.
