The Baisley Powell Elebash Fund is a strong supporter of performing arts and community-based arts education, favoring general operating support for established cultural organizations—especially music, jazz, and theater groups in New York City (despite the fund’s Chicago address). Grants skew toward neighborhood arts institutions and ensembles that serve diverse, often historically Black and Latinx communities (Harlem, Brooklyn). The portfolio emphasizes sustaining institutional capacity and programming rather than project-specific funding.
A $1,000,000 general operating grant to Graduate Center Foundation Inc is the clearest sign of how Baisley Powell Elebash Fund Xxxxx5009 gives: through substantial, unrestricted support for New York arts institutions. The fund’s recent grants also include $450,000 to Mama Foundation for the Arts and $300,000 each to The Harlem Chamber Players and Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, pointing to a portfolio built around sustaining organizations rather than funding short-term projects. Most of the named recipients are music, jazz, theater, or dance organizations in New York City neighborhoods such as Harlem, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. The pattern is consistent with a funder that supports institutional capacity in community-based arts education and performance. General operating support appears throughout the list, including for ensembles, conservatories, presenting organizations, and incubators that work with emerging artists. Grants reach both larger cultural institutions and neighborhood-rooted groups, with repeated attention to music training and performance spaces. The foundation’s giving is regional in scope and centered on arts organizations serving local audiences and artists across New York City.
Music education and performance are central to the fund’s recent grants. It gave $300,000 to Brooklyn Conservatory of Music for general support and $150,000 to Bloomingdale School of Music for general support, alongside $100,000 to Society of the Third Street Music School Settlement Inc for general support. These awards show continued support for community music schools and conservatory-style organizations. Jazz and related music presenters also receive steady backing. The Jazz Gallery received $225,000 for general support, and Afro-latin Jazz Alliance of New York received $150,000 for general support. In theater and dance, the fund granted $175,000 to Rattlestick Productions Inc, $150,000 to Brooklyn Ballet, and $100,000 to Classical Theatre of Harlem, all as general support. It also supports field infrastructure. Grantmakers in the Arts received $100,000 for general support, and Arts Business Collaborative Inc received $25,000 for general support.
Typical grants are mid-to-large in size: the p25 is $100,000, the median is $162,500, and the p75 is $243,750. That distribution is consistent with a funder that favors meaningful operating awards rather than small project grants. The recent list is dominated by general support, and the same 2023 grant year appears across the records provided. The fund does not make program-related investments and does not fund individuals. Based on the available data, the portfolio reads as institutional support for organizations rather than an open application or individual-aid model.
