The A&H Shamah Family Foundation concentrates its giving on Orthodox Jewish communal life and education, favoring institutional support for synagogues, yeshivas, and umbrella Orthodox organizations. Grants are sizable and often unrestricted, indicating a preference for flexible, general operating support to established Jewish institutions. The foundation appears relationship-driven, making repeat, high-dollar gifts to a small set of trusted organizations in New York-area Jewish communal infrastructure.
Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a small number of repeat grantees; preference for unrestricted/general operating support rather than many small or project-specific grants.
A&h Shamah Family Foundation Inc. directs much of its giving toward Orthodox Jewish communal institutions, with a pattern of large, often unrestricted support for synagogues, yeshivas, and umbrella organizations. Its recent grants show a foundation that backs established groups with repeated awards over multiple years rather than one-time gifts. Barkai Foundation received $500,000 in 2025 after a $250,000 grant in 2024, while The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations received $100,000 in 2025 following prior support in 2024 and 2023. Congregation Beth Torah also appears as a repeat recipient, with $100,000 in both 2023 and 2025. The foundation’s portfolio includes education, religious infrastructure, advocacy, and broader Jewish charitable work, with several grants described as unrestricted charitable purpose support. It also funds organizations beyond New York, including Washington, DC-based American Israel Education Foundation Inc and Chicago-based Jewish Book Trust Inc. The overall pattern suggests a relationship-based grantmaker making substantial institutional awards to a relatively small circle of organizations within Orthodox Jewish and related communal life.
Educational institutions are a clear part of the foundation’s portfolio. Magen David Yeshiva received $161,000 in 2024 for charitable purposes, and Yeshivah of Flatbush received $36,000 in 2024 plus $10,000 in 2023 and another $10,000 in 2024. Religious congregations also receive support, including $100,000 to Congregation Beth Torah in 2025 for unrestricted charitable purpose support and $100,000 in 2023 for charitable purposes. In the advocacy and community-organization space, The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations received $100,000 in 2025 and $50,000 in 2023, plus a $25,000 grant in 2024. The foundation also supports health and service-related Jewish charities, such as Chai Lifeline, which received $72,500 in 2025, $37,000 in 2024, and $36,000 in 2023.
Typical grant size is moderate to large: the 25th percentile is $19,750, the median is $36,500, and the 75th percentile is $74,375. Many awards are unrestricted or broadly framed as charitable-purpose support, which points to flexible operating-style funding. Recipients recur across years, including several organizations that appear multiple times in the recent-grants list, showing continuity rather than one-off giving. The foundation is structured as a family foundation, not an individual-giving vehicle, and it does not make program-related investments or grants to individuals.
