About United Way of Greater Charlotte
United Way of Greater Charlotte Inc directs substantial restricted funding toward contracted outcomes, with Housing Collaborative receiving the largest recent grant at $2,878,166 in 2024 and another $1,609,832 in 2025. That pattern points to a funder that uses large, repeated awards to support local program delivery rather than one-time philanthropy. The recent grants list also shows sustained support for Charlotte-based intermediaries and service organizations, including Socialserve, Salvation Army - Charlotte Area Command, Care Ring, and Communities in Schools of Char-meck Inc. The foundation’s stated focus areas cover education, health, financial stability, economic opportunity, housing stability, food security, mental health, neighborhood revitalization, youth mentoring, and nonprofit capacity building. Its active grant programs add a place-based layer to that portfolio, including neighborhood revitalization work through United Neighborhoods, regional funding in Anson and Union counties, and mental wellness grants in Cabarrus County. Across the record, the foundation appears to fund both operating costs and restricted program activity, often pairing donor-designated support with general support or contracted-outcome funding for local nonprofits working in the Charlotte region.
