The Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment concentrates its philanthropy exclusively on environmental work, with a clear emphasis on advancing climate-smart agricultural solutions. All recorded grants support the Environmental Defense Fund, indicating the foundation funds advocacy and programmatic efforts that link agriculture, climate mitigation and sustainable practices. Their giving is pragmatic and targeted, favoring experienced national organizations that can translate science into policy and market change.
The Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment Inc directs its environmental grantmaking toward climate-smart agriculture and the policy systems around it. Its largest recent grants each reached $1.5 million, both to Environmental Defense Fund Incorporated for work on resilient water systems and climate-smart agriculture, showing a preference for large, programmatic support rather than many small awards. The foundation also backed Resources Legacy Fund at seven-figure levels for California land-sea connection work, indicating that it funds connected land, water, and coastal conservation strategies as well as farm-focused policy change. Across the recent record, the foundation works through experienced national and regional intermediaries and ties environmental goals to implementation, advocacy, and market or policy change. The grants include support for water systems, coastal conservation, and agricultural practices that reduce environmental impact. It also appears to sustain multi-year relationships with key organizations: Environmental Defense Fund Incorporated appears in multiple years, as do Resources Legacy Fund and Chesapeake Bay Foundation Inc. The pattern points to a funder that prefers established grantees able to operate at scale across environmental issue areas.
A central thread in the foundation’s giving is climate-smart agriculture. It gave $1.5 million to Environmental Defense Fund Incorporated for climate smart agriculture, and the related agriculture program for the Chesapeake region focuses on reducing agriculture’s impact on water quality while sustaining farm viability. Water quality is another major theme. The foundation awarded $500,000 to Chesapeake Bay Foundation Inc for PA Agriculture, linking farm practices to watershed outcomes, and $350,000 to Water Foundation for leveraging public funding. It also supports land-and-sea conservation work in California. Resources Legacy Fund received $1.025 million for California Land-Sea Connection and $300,000 for California 30x30 Initiative Tribal Engagement, showing interest in habitat planning and tribal engagement within conservation. The grant record also includes a clean drinking water line of work, with California-focused grants aimed at water quality, availability, and affordability.

Highly concentrated: a small number of relatively large grants directed repeatedly to a single national environmental organization (Environmental Defense Fund), indicating preference for sustained multi-grant support to a trusted partner.
Notable grantees: Environmental Defense Fund
Typical grant size is $4,734 at the 25th percentile, $10,000 at the median, and $40,000 at the 75th percentile, but the recent record also includes seven-figure awards. The foundation shows repeated support to the same organizations across years, including Environmental Defense Fund Incorporated, Resources Legacy Fund, Chesapeake Bay Foundation Inc, Chesapeake Conservancy Inc, and National Geographic Society. It is classified as a regular funder, not a DAF, and it funds individuals. Unsolicited proposals are accepted in several program areas, including watershed advocacy, clean drinking water, water management, capacity building, and the general competitive grantmaking pathway.
Giving is national, but it is heavily concentrated in a few places. Maryland recipients account for 32% of grants, and Annapolis, Baltimore, and Bethesda all appear in the grant record. California is another major hub, with Sacramento, West Marin, and San Francisco recurring among recipients. New York City also appears through large grants to New York-based organizations, while Washington, DC shows up in coastal conservation funding. Outside the United States, the recipient distribution includes three grants in Canada and one in Switzerland.
Its recent record centers on environmental work, especially climate-smart agriculture, watershed and drinking water issues, and California land-sea or coastal conservation. Program descriptions also point to water management, tribal engagement in conservation planning, and efforts to reduce agriculture’s impact on water quality.
Yes. Several active program areas accept unsolicited proposals, including Watershed Advocacy, Clean, Safe Drinking Water, Water Management, Capacity Building Grants, Cannabis, and the general competitive grantmaking path. The agriculture program in the Chesapeake region is listed as not accepting unsolicited requests.
The grant-size distribution is $4,734 at the 25th percentile, $10,000 at the median, and $40,000 at the 75th percentile. That said, the recent grants list also includes awards of $500,000, $650,000, $1,000,000, $1,025,000, and $1,500,000.
Several organizations recur across the recent grants list, including Environmental Defense Fund Incorporated, Resources Legacy Fund, Chesapeake Bay Foundation Inc, Chesapeake Conservancy Inc, and National Geographic Society. The repeated awards suggest ongoing relationships rather than one-time gifts.
