About New Schools for Alabama
New Schools for Alabama backs public charter school growth in Alabama through a mix of startup, expansion, and school-support grants. Its recent awards show repeated support for the same schools over multiple years, including Montgomery Education Fund, which received $1,197,433 in 2024, and Freedom Preparatory Academy, which received $1,103,457 in 2025. The foundation also funds school operators and founders in places such as Mobile, Birmingham, Prattville, Helena, and Marion, reflecting a statewide charter-school portfolio rather than a single-campus approach. The giving profile combines large one-time commitments with follow-on support. Alabama Classical Group received $1,070,935 in 2025, while Alabama Aerospace and Aviation Schools Inc received $725,271 in 2024 and $620,633 in 2023. Other repeat recipients include Covenant Academy of Mobile, Breakthrough Charter School, Empower Schools of Alabama Inc, and Woodlawn Community Charter School. The pattern suggests that New Schools for Alabama supports both early-stage charter school launch and continued development after schools are operating. Its stated purpose is to support excellent public charter schools in Alabama by recruiting, training, and supporting leaders, advocating for supportive policy, and engaging families and communities. The grant list aligns with that mission through recurring support for Alabama charter schools and related education organizations.
What New Schools for Alabama Funds
Leadership development is a clear part of the portfolio. The School Founders Program is a yearlong, full-time fellowship with stipend, coaching, compliance assistance, school design resources, and paid travel for aspiring public charter school founders in Alabama. Startup and expansion funding is another core area. Through the Alabama CSP Subgrant, New Schools for Alabama provides competitive grants for new, expanding, and replicating high-quality charter schools in Alabama, with awards of up to $1.5 million. They also support school operations and facilities. The Facilities Loan Fund is listed for charter school facility needs, and the Credit Enhancement program is designed to strengthen charter school financing and borrowing capacity. Teacher support appears as well through the Teacher Quality Fund, which is described as a funding stream for teacher quality initiatives for charter schools.
