The Reed L Harman & Nan M Harman Foundation makes a small number of relatively large, unrestricted support grants focused on community-level quality-of-life projects. Their giving favors outdoor/landscape preservation and community infrastructure (trails, estate/park stewardship) alongside direct community services like meal programs. Grants appear targeted and project-driven rather than broadly diversified across many nonprofits.
The Reed L Harman & Nan M Harman Foundation stands out for large support grants tied to trails, land stewardship, and local community services. Its largest recent award was $100,000 to Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Millerton, New York, a signal that rail-trail preservation is a central thread in the foundation’s giving. That same pattern appears in California through support for Palos Verdes Estate Foundation and Palos Verdes Land Conservancy, alongside grants to meal providers such as Martha’s Kitchen in Indio. The grant list also shows backing for hospitals and health-related nonprofits, including Cedars Sinai Medical Group, Eisenhower Medical Center, and Torrance Memorial Hospital Foundation. The foundation’s giving is concentrated in project support rather than broad, many-issue philanthropy. Recent awards range from four-figure gifts to five-figure and six-figure commitments, with repeated support for organizations tied to outdoor places, community infrastructure, and direct human services. The result is a portfolio that connects environmental stewardship, trail use, and local quality-of-life needs in the regions where it gives most often.
Rail-trail and open-space work is a clear theme. In 2024, the foundation gave $100,000 to Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Millerton, New York, and followed with $6,000 in 2025. It also supported Palos Verdes Land Conservancy with $5,000 in 2024, showing interest in both regional trail systems and local land conservation. Community services are another visible area. Martha’s Kitchen in Indio received $50,000 in 2024 and $10,748 in 2025, while South Bay Auxilliary in Palos Verdes received $5,000 in both 2024 and 2025. Health and community infrastructure appear as well: Cedars Sinai Medical Group received $30,000 in both 2024 and 2025, and Torrance Memorial Hospital Foundation received $10,000 in 2024 and 2025.
Typical grants are modest to mid-sized by foundation standards: p25 is $1,000, median is $5,000, and p75 is $10,000. The recent record shows a concentrated pattern with a small number of larger project-support grants, including several repeated awards to the same organizations across 2024 and 2025. Grants are listed as support, which points to unrestricted or general project backing rather than program-restricted funding. The foundation appears to make one-off and recurring grants, depending on the recipient.
