The Oakland Public Education Fund leads the development and investment of community resources in Oakland public schools so that all students can learn, grow, and thrive.
The Oakland Public Education Fund’s largest recent grants go to Oakland Unified School District for sustained work in middle-school computer science, mathematics, whole-child supports, educator professional development, and school innovation. That pattern shows a funder built around direct support for district priorities rather than a broad portfolio of unrelated causes. Across the recent grant list, the funder combines large district-level awards with targeted grants to community organizations working on attendance, family engagement, trauma-informed support, and scholarship aid. The Oakland Public Education Fund also backs school-centered intermediaries and community partners that help students stay connected to school. Oakland Natives Give Back Inc., East Bay Asian Youth Center, Safe Passages, and Oakland California Youth Outreach all received grants for attendance and engagement work with disconnected students and families. Other awards support the Oakland Reach’s family liaison and literacy work, Lincoln Families’ early childhood social-emotional supports, and Oakland Promise scholarships for graduating seniors. The overall picture is of a local public-education funder that moves money through both district systems and nonprofit partners to support students from early learning through high school transition.
A major theme is middle-school academic improvement. The Oakland Public Education Fund gave Oakland Unified School District two large awards for computer science, mathematics, educator professional development, and innovation across middle schools, including $5,999,840 in 2024 and $5,692,998 in 2025. Another clear area is student attendance and re-engagement. In 2024 and 2025, the funder supported Oakland Community United for Education Success work through East Bay Agency for Children, Safe Passages, East Bay Spanish Speaking Citizens Foundation, Oakland Kids First, and other partners to increase attendance and engagement of disconnected students and families. The foundation also supports whole-child and transition needs. Lincoln Families received $85,000 for culturally responsive, relationship-based, trauma-informed early childhood social-emotional supports, while Oakland Promise received $80,000 for 16 scholarships to help graduating seniors pay for post-high-school educational needs.

Typical grant size is $17,928 at the 25th percentile, $45,000 at the median, and $156,080 at the 75th percentile, with a much larger set of district-scale grants at the top end. The pattern is clearly recurring: Oakland Unified School District appears in multiple years, and several community partners also show up across 2024 and 2025 for related attendance and engagement work. The funder is classified as a regular funder, not a DAF, and it does not fund individuals or make program-related investments. Several active programs accept unsolicited requests, including fiscal sponsorship, the New Teacher Supply Fund, ConstructionLink, and A to Z Fund mini-grants.
Grantmaking is highly concentrated in California, with 97% of grants going to recipients in the HQ state. Oakland is the dominant recipient city, including Oakland Unified School District, Tech Exchange, The Freedom School LLC, and Oakland Promise. A smaller share goes elsewhere in the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Emeryville, and San Leandro, and one grant in the sample went to Stillwater, Minnesota. The recipient country distribution is entirely U.S.-based.
The funder supports K–12 public education, especially Oakland Unified School District priorities, plus teacher mini-grants, volunteer placement, fiscal sponsorship, STEM and career pathways, equity-focused school supports, and student and family services. Recent grants also show attention to attendance, early childhood social-emotional support, trauma-informed practice, broadband, and scholarships.
The grant size distribution is $17,928 at the 25th percentile, $45,000 at the median, and $156,080 at the 75th percentile. The recent record also includes much larger district-level awards alongside smaller mini-grants through active programs such as A to Z Fund mini-grants.
