The Lewis Family Charitable Foundation concentrates its giving in Newport Beach/Orange County, favoring sizable, targeted grants to local health care and independent primary education institutions. Its support is focused on capital projects and new program development for a regional hospital system and on strengthening primary-school education through significant direct gifts. The foundation makes few but large awards and shows repeat support to a single health-system partner.
A recurring pattern stands out in The Lewis Family Charitable Foundation’s recent giving: repeated six-figure support for Hoag Hospital Foundation alongside a wider portfolio of large grants to schools, policy organizations, and service nonprofits. The foundation’s most visible health-care support goes to capital project and innovative program development work, while its education giving includes major gifts to Harbor Day School for primary education. It also backs a set of organizations focused on free enterprise, individual freedom, traditional values, and public-policy advocacy, including National Review Institute, Young America’s Foundation, and The Heritage Foundation. This is a foundation that makes relatively few but substantial awards. Its recent grants include $200,000 to Harbor Day School, $170,000 and $160,000 to Hoag Hospital Foundation in consecutive years, and $135,000 to National Review Institute. Other support reaches disaster relief, disability services, digital media, and cancer-related work, showing a mix of local institutional funding and issue-based national philanthropy. The grant list suggests a consistent preference for direct, named recipients rather than broad, multi-grant program portfolios.
Health care is one of the clearest priorities. In 2025, the foundation gave $160,000 to Hoag Hospital Foundation for capital project and innovative program development, following a $170,000 grant in 2024 for the same purpose. Education is another anchor area: Harbor Day School received $200,000 in 2024 to provide students with an excellent primary education that would set the foundation for further academic achievement. The foundation also funds civic and policy organizations. It gave $135,000 in 2025 to National Review Institute to preserve and promote Buckley’s legacy and advance the principles of a free society, and $110,000 in 2024 to Turning Point USA to identify, educate, train, and organize students around fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government. Separate grants supported disaster relief and disability services, including The Salvation Army and The Shea Center.
Typical grants cluster at $10,000, with a median of $10,000 and a 75th percentile of $28,750, even though the recent list also includes much larger awards. The pattern is not limited to one-off gifts: Hoag Hospital Foundation appears in both 2024 and 2025 with the same stated purpose, and several other organizations also receive repeated support across the two years on file. The Lewis Family Charitable Foundation is classified as a regular funder, not a DAF, does not fund individuals, and does not make program-related investments. The grant list shows direct support to named organizations rather than an open application-style process.
