The Samuelson Foundation concentrates its giving on Baltimore–area health care institutions and a smaller stream of local higher education capital projects. Most grants fund hospital clinical departments, capital medical equipment or specialty treatment centers (emergency medicine, infusion, cardiac diagnostics), with repeat multi-year support to major regional hospitals. A secondary, but notable, interest is campus facilities at a local university (performing arts).
Herman & Walter Samuelson Foundation Inc has repeatedly backed Baltimore-area health care projects that change hospital capacity in concrete ways: infusion treatment, emergency medicine, cardiac diagnostics, and specialty equipment. The largest recent grant in the data is $500,000 to Greater Baltimore Medical Center for the Sandra R. Berman Infusion Center, and the same center received additional six-figure support in later years. That pattern shows a funder comfortable with multi-year capital commitments rather than one-time gifts. The foundation’s giving also extends to local academic and community infrastructure. Stevenson University received several grants for a performing arts center, including $400,000 in 2025, while Sinai Hospital of Baltimore saw repeated support across multiple department-level projects. Across the recent grants list, the Samuelson Foundation favors institutions that can use capital funding, equipment purchases, and program support to expand services within the Baltimore region.
Health care dominates the foundation’s recent grantmaking, especially hospital infrastructure. Greater Baltimore Medical Center received $400,000 in 2023 for the Promise Project and $100,000 in 2024 for the Berman Cancer Center, alongside the larger infusion-center awards. At Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, grants supported several distinct clinical functions: $200,000 in 2025 for the Department of Emergency Medicine, $134,920 in 2025 for fiberoptic endoscopic equipment, and $80,000 in 2025 for the High Touch Medical Program. The foundation also backed medical education and research, giving $200,000 in 2025 to the Univ of Maryland School of Medicine for the Zaffere Rural MD Scholars Program and $150,000 in 2023 to Kennedy Krieger Institute for osteogenesis imperfecta research. Outside health care, the foundation funded capital work at Stevenson University and Talmudical Academy of Baltimore, including a performing arts center, an early childhood building, and a recreational campus.
Typical grants fall in a mid-five-figure to low-six-figure range, with a p25 of $10,000, a median of $25,000, and a p75 of $58,420. The recent grant list shows many six-figure awards, alongside smaller awards such as $80,000 and $86,509. The pattern is recurring rather than one-off: the same institutions appear across multiple years, including Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Stevenson University, and Talmudical Academy of Baltimore. The foundation funds individuals and shows a strong preference for local Maryland recipients. It does not make program-related investments.
