The Chun & Jane Chiu Family Foundation concentrates its giving on higher-education and public policy research, with a clear interest in scholarship related to Taiwan and academic research broadly. Their grants support established, research-focused institutions rather than grassroots service providers, indicating a preference for funding scholarly analysis and university research activities. The foundation makes relatively large, targeted grants rather than many small awards.
A defining feature of the Chun & Jane Chiu Family Foundation’s grantmaking is its sustained support for Taiwan-related research and policy analysis. The largest recent grant went to Stanford University for education and research activities, and a recurring set of awards has gone to the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars for its history and public policy program about Taiwan. That pattern places universities and research institutions at the center of the foundation’s work. The foundation also funds organizations that connect Taiwanese communities across generations and geographies. Recent grants support Taiwanese American cultural adaptation, heritage language preservation, and coordination among Taiwanese community groups in Northern California. In Silicon Valley, it has backed organizations working on technology collaboration between Silicon Valley and Taiwan, alongside church-based community outreach to Taiwanese Americans. Beyond Taiwanese policy and diaspora interests, the foundation makes smaller grants to direct-service groups serving children, people with developmental disabilities, terminally ill patients, and senior dogs. The mix suggests a grantmaker that favors targeted, purpose-driven awards to established institutions and community organizations rather than broad general operating support across many sectors.
The foundation’s strongest theme is Taiwan-focused scholarship and policy research. It gave $75,000 to Woodrow Wilson Intl Center for Scholars in 2024 and another $75,000 in 2025 for research in the history and public policy program about Taiwan. It also awarded $20,000 to Global Taiwan Institute to support policy research and programs that improve public understanding about Taiwan and its people. A second cluster centers on Taiwanese diaspora identity and language. Taiwanese American Center of N America received $12,000 in 2024 and $10,000 in 2023 to help Taiwanese diaspora communities adapt to American culture, preserve the Taiwanese mother language, connect younger and older generations, and promote intercultural understanding. The foundation also supports community coordination and technology ties in Silicon Valley. Taita-sv received $20,000 in 2024 and $12,500 in 2023 to promote collaboration between Silicon Valley and Taiwan in technology. Senior Taiwanese Assoc of N America also received repeat support for coordinating Taiwanese communities in Northern California.

Concentrated, high-dollar grants to a small number of established institutions; repeat funding to the same research center and one-off large gifts to major universities.
Notable grantees: Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Stanford University
Typical awards are targeted rather than broad: the grant-size distribution is $3,000 at the 25th percentile, $10,000 at the median, and $20,000 at the 75th percentile. A smaller set of larger grants sits above that range, including $75,000 and $100,000 awards to research institutions. Repeat recipients appear across multiple years, including Woodrow Wilson Intl Center for Scholars, Taita-sv, Taiwanese American Center of N America, Senior Taiwanese Assoc of N America, Agape Educational Center Inc, Canaan Taiwanese Christian Church, and Silicon Valley Canaan Evergreen Academy. The foundation does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments.
Grant recipients are entirely in the United States, with most awards going to organizations in California. Recent California recipients include Stanford University in Stanford, Taita-sv in Sunnyvale, and multiple groups in San Jose, Fremont, Berkeley, and El Monte. Outside California, the foundation has supported Washington, DC organizations such as Woodrow Wilson Intl Center for Scholars and Formosan Association for Public Affairs, plus smaller grants to groups in Nevada and South Dakota. The recent-grants list also shows strong concentration in the San Jose and Silicon Valley area.
The foundation most often funds Taiwan-related scholarship, public policy research, and Taiwanese diaspora community work. Recent awards include $75,000 twice to Woodrow Wilson Intl Center for Scholars for Taiwan history and public policy research, plus support for Taiwanese American cultural adaptation, heritage language preservation, and community coordination.
Its middle-of-distribution grants are modest and targeted: the 25th percentile is $3,000, the median is $10,000, and the 75th percentile is $20,000. The recent grants list also includes larger awards such as $75,000 and $100,000 for research institutions.
Yes. Several recipients appear in more than one year, including Woodrow Wilson Intl Center for Scholars, Taita-sv, Taiwanese American Center of N America, Senior Taiwanese Assoc of N America, Agape Educational Center Inc, Canaan Taiwanese Christian Church, and Silicon Valley Canaan Evergreen Academy.
The foundation funds Taiwanese community groups, education-focused organizations, and select direct-service providers. Examples from recent grants include support for Taiwanese community coordination in Northern California, heritage-language and intergenerational work, children’s programs, services for people with developmental disabilities, palliative care, and a grant for senior dogs.
Its grantmaking is heavily California-based, with 71% of grants going to recipients in California. Recent grants also went to Washington, DC, Nevada, and South Dakota, but the recent-grants list shows repeated concentration in San Jose, Fremont, Sunnyvale, Berkeley, Stanford, and El Monte.
