About Whitehall Foundation
The Whitehall Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation focused exclusively on assisting basic research in vertebrate (excluding clinical) and invertebrate neurobiology in the United States. Investigations should specifically concern neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior, with the overall goal of better understanding behavioral output or brain mechanisms of behavior.

About Whitehall Foundation
Whitehall Foundation Inc centers its giving on basic research in vertebrate and invertebrate neurobiology, with a specific emphasis on neural mechanisms tied to sensory, motor, and other complex functions as they relate to behavior. The recent record shows large awards to university research groups, including $500,000 to Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania for general purpose support and $350,000 to University of California San Diego for biological research. Awards at that scale sit alongside many smaller research grants, indicating a portfolio built around laboratory-based science rather than individual aid. The foundation’s grant history also points to repeated support for major research universities. Boston University, the University of Pittsburgh, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and the University of California Los Angeles each appear multiple times in the recent grants list. Those recurring awards suggest an established pattern of backing research institutions over time, with the same types of recipients returning across grant years. Across the sample, Whitehall Foundation Inc funds nonprofit institutions and university laboratories in the United States, aligning closely with its stated focus on neuroscience, neurobiology, and basic biological research. The grants reflect support for investigators working on fundamental questions about nervous system function and behavior rather than clinical applications or individual recipients.
What Whitehall Foundation Funds
Whitehall Foundation Inc gives most directly to basic neurobiology and neuroscience. In 2024, it awarded $350,000 to University of California San Diego for biological research, and in 2025 it gave $297,000 to University of Pittsburgh for the same purpose. Those awards fit the foundation’s emphasis on laboratory-based work in nervous system function. Behavioral neuroscience is another clear thread. The foundation’s stated scope includes neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as they relate to behavior. Recent grants to University of Utah, Yale University, and Baylor College of Medicine show that this research orientation is being supported through university-based projects. The foundation also funds broader biological research, not just narrow neurobiology. Recent awards to Columbia University and Rutgers University Newark were listed for biological research, showing that the grant program can support basic science projects within nonprofit research institutions and universities when they fit the foundation’s research priorities.
