The Verizon Foundation makes very large, targeted grants to international humanitarian and child-welfare causes rather than many small local gifts. Recent giving shows support for emergency medical/humanitarian assistance tied to Israel (American Friends of Magen David Adom) and major international child relief and development work (Save the Children).
Highly concentrated giving: very few grants of large size (two $1 million grants), favoring established international organizations rather than many small or local grantees; appears event- or need-driven for high-profile humanitarian causes.
A defining feature of Verizon Foundation’s recent grantmaking is the pair of $1,000,000 gifts in 2024, one to Save the Children Federation Inc and one to American Friends of Magen David Adom. Those awards point to a funder that concentrates on large, targeted support for emergency medical and humanitarian response and for child welfare and relief work. The foundation’s recent record also includes substantial support for disaster response through International Rescue Committee Inc and the American National Red Cross, alongside civic and community grants to organizations such as Charities Aid Foundation America and St Jude Children's Research Hospital. Verizon Foundation operates as a regular funder with a national giving scope and a broad corporate philanthropy footprint. Its grantmaking is not limited to one program line: recent awards also connect to professional development and training, community and civic engagement, and matching-gift style payouts referenced in the grant records. The pattern suggests a foundation that uses both headline grants and smaller follow-on awards to support established nonprofits working in crisis response, health, and community benefit.
In humanitarian and emergency relief, Verizon Foundation gave $40,000 to International Rescue Committee Inc for disaster relief and $30,000 to the United States Association for UNHCR for disaster relief. It also awarded $30,000 to the American National Red Cross for disaster relief, showing repeated support for established response organizations. Child welfare is another clear theme. The foundation’s $1,000,000 grant to Save the Children Federation Inc aligns with its international child relief and development work, while a separate $12,346 payout to the same organization appears in the record as a matching-style grant entry. The foundation also supports civic and community institutions. Recent examples include $17,849 to Charities Aid Foundation America for other civic/community activity and $13,908 to St Jude Children's Research Hospital for other civic/community activity. A smaller but notable strand is professional development: Verizon Foundation gave $500,000 to Human Rights Campaign Foundation for a professional development and training institute.
Verizon Foundation’s grant sizes are highly skewed: the typical grant is $100 at the 25th percentile, $250 at the median, and $750 at the 75th percentile. That sits alongside occasional very large awards, including seven-figure grants in 2024. The record also shows recurring payments to the same organizations across years, including Save the Children Federation Inc, International Rescue Committee Inc, American National Red Cross, and St Jude Children's Research Hospital. The foundation is a regular funder rather than a DAF vehicle and does not make program-related investments. The grant records include matching or payout-style entries, but the provided material does not show an unsolicited application path.
