For 100 years, we have united the community to create access and opportunity for all North Texans to thrive. We mobilize a movement to ensure all neighbors have access to education, income and health—the building blocks of opportunity.
United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Inc directs its grantmaking toward the systems that support North Texans’ daily lives, with large operating and program-support grants flowing to community organizations across Dallas-area education, health, housing, and basic-needs services. In the recent grant list, the largest award is a donor-designated grant of $3,672,220 to Designated Donations to Uwmd, followed by multi-million-dollar support for Citysquare and Harmony Community Development Corporation. That pattern points to a funder that moves substantial dollars through both designated giving and organizational support rather than one-time project awards. The foundation’s portfolio includes early childhood education, K-12 literacy, workforce development, financial stability, healthcare access, maternal and child health, digital access, and community capacity-building. It also backs social entrepreneurship support through incubator and accelerator-style work. Many recipients are Dallas-based, but the list also reaches nearby communities such as DeSoto, Mesquite, and Farmers Branch. Across the 2023–2024 grants shown here, the emphasis is on keeping local service providers operating and resourced, especially those working with families, children, and residents facing health or income barriers.
In education, the foundation supports both early childhood and school-age learning. Lumin Education received $564,367 in 2024 and $539,771 in 2023 for program operating costs, and Childcaregroup received $1,322,435 in 2023 and $973,498 in 2024. Health access is another clear theme. Prism Health North Texas received $1,102,572 in 2024 and $610,297 in 2023, while Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic received $696,200 in 2024, all for program operating costs. The grant list also shows direct support for family and housing stability. Interfaith Family Services (Interfaith Housing) received $595,920 in 2023, and Metrocrest Services received $768,394 in 2023. Workforce-linked support appears in the Dallas County Community College District Foundation Inc award of $845,308 in 2023.
Typical grants cluster at a scale suited to operating support: the 25th percentile is $20,000, the median is $50,000, and the 75th percentile is $116,417. The recent list also shows repeated support to the same organizations across 2023 and 2024, indicating ongoing relationships rather than one-off awards. The foundation is a regular funder and does not fund individuals or make program-related investments. Its grantmaking style is heavily restricted and donor-designated, with many awards labeled for program operations or related overhead and cost coverage.
