About William G Irwin Charity Foundation
The William G Irwin Charity Foundation is notable for making large capital grants across California and Hawaii, with a pattern that favors buildings, facilities, and infrastructure rather than operating support. Recent awards range from a $1,000,000 grant to Stanford University School of Medicine for robotic surgery training and research to a $700,000 grant to The Trust for Public Land for India Basin Waterfront Park. That same approach shows up in housing, health care, food access, and school facilities, including a $600,000 grant to Hana Health for a rehabilitation and support center and a $500,000 grant to Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco for construction of a new Sunnydale club. The foundation’s giving also reaches older adults, patients with complex health needs, and community organizations working on safety, accessibility, and campus improvements. The recent record points to an institution that uses capital funding to shape physical spaces for service delivery, education, and community use.
What William G Irwin Charity Foundation Funds
Education is a consistent theme in the foundation’s capital giving. In 2025, it gave $300,000 to Children’s Day School for Building Dreams Together: The Campaign for Childrens Day School, and it also supported San Francisco University High School with $250,000 for the California Street campus. Health-related capital projects appear in both clinical and specialized settings. The foundation awarded $275,000 to St Mary’s Medical Center Foundation for an adolescent behavioral health anti-ligature project, while Woodland Memorial Hospital Foundation received $262,288 for 3D mammography for Woodland Healthcare. Food security is another clear focus: Maui Food Bank received $300,000 for Food 4 All, and The Food Basket received $285,000 for its emergency food program. It also funds cultural and community assets, including $300,000 to Curiodyssey for its Marina Gallery and Labs.
How William G Irwin Charity Foundation Gives
Typical grants cluster in the mid-to-large range: the 25th percentile is $50,000, the median is $100,000, and the 75th percentile is $200,000. The recent record shows repeated support for capital work rather than one-time small awards, with several recipients appearing more than once in the list, including San Francisco University High School. The foundation is classified as a regular funder, not a DAF, and it also funds individuals. Its portfolio suggests a consistent preference for facility renovation, equipment, construction, and campaign support over unrestricted operating grants.
