Shanahan Family Charitable Foundation

About Shanahan Family Charitable Foundation

The Shanahan Family Charitable Foundation’s clearest pattern is large, repeated support for Alzheimer’s drug discovery and brain-health research. In the recent-grants list, the biggest awards go to the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative, with multiyear general-purpose grants that show a sustained emphasis on research infrastructure as well as discovery. That biomedical focus sits alongside another major line of giving: higher education, especially institutions tied to STEM training and research. Harvey Mudd College appears repeatedly among the larger grants, and the foundation also supports research-heavy universities and institutes such as the Allen Institute, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Tufts University, and the University of Pennsylvania. The foundation’s giving is not limited to science and education. It also supports independent media through the Independent Media Initiative and a related Community Partners grant, while directing place-based support to community and environmental work through Cobbs Creek Restoration and Community Foundation. Across the recent record, the foundation favors institutional grantees and often returns to the same partners over multiple years.
