The Rose and David Dortort Foundation funds a mix of environment/conservation, health (including reproductive and medical research), education, and civic/economic justice causes, with an appreciable interest in Jewish campus life. Grants skew toward mid-sized awards to mission-driven nonprofits and research organizations, often given as repeated installments. Their portfolio blends local Los Angeles investments (community colleges, Hillel, legal services) with international and species-focused conservation work (Madagascar, rainforest, invertebrate and botanical conservation).
A repeated $25,000 relationship with Hillel the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life signals one of the clearest threads in The Rose and David Dortort Foundation C/o California Community Foundation’s grantmaking: steady support for Jewish campus life alongside environmental, health, and education work. The foundation’s recent grants also show multiple-year commitments to conservation groups, medical and reproductive health organizations, and Los Angeles cultural and education institutions. Its portfolio includes recurring support for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, Wildlife Conservation Network, Earth Island Institute Inc, and Community Alliance for Learning, suggesting a preference for organizations that can absorb mid-sized grants over time rather than one-off gifts. The foundation also backs research and advocacy organizations, from Madagascar Health and Environmental Research to California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform and Centro Legal De La Raza. That mix points to a funder with a broad civic and social agenda, with especially consistent attention to Jewish campus programs, species and habitat conservation, and Los Angeles-based nonprofit infrastructure. A notable feature of the recent record is how often the same organizations return across years, including Hillel, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, and Earth Island Institute Inc. That pattern helps distinguish the foundation’s grantmaking from a purely opportunistic or single-issue profile.
In health, the foundation gave $60,000 to Planned Parenthood Los Angeles in 2023, then followed with $30,000 grants in both 2024 and 2025. It also supported Madagascar Health and Environmental Research with $40,000 in 2024 and $20,000 in 2023, linking health grantmaking with research activity. Environmental funding covers both conservation networks and species-specific work. Wildlife Conservation Network received $35,000 in 2025 and $25,000 in 2023, while Earth Island Institute Inc received $25,000 in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Orchid Conservation Alliance also appears in the record with a $20,000 grant in 2023. Education and civic work show another lane. Community Alliance for Learning received $25,000 in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform received $25,000 in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The foundation also supported Centro Legal De La Raza with $25,000 in 2023.
