The James M Stanton Foundation concentrates its giving in the Twin Cities area on organizations that deliver workforce training, veterans’ support, and community development services. It makes large, targeted gifts—often repeated—to a small set of Minnesota nonprofits that provide job training, housing stability, and wraparound human services for low-income and veteran populations. The foundation favors capacity-building and long-term program support rather than small, one-off awards.
The James M Stanton Foundation’s giving is defined by repeated, large awards to a small group of Minnesota nonprofits working on workforce training, veterans’ services, housing stability, and resident supports. One of the clearest examples is Dunwoody College of Technology, which received $3.3 million in 2024 after a $1 million grant in 2023. Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans also received three consecutive seven-figure grants: $1.25 million in 2023, $1.25 million in 2024, and $1 million in 2025. That pattern points to a funder that backs multi-year program delivery rather than spreading money across many unrelated causes. The foundation’s recent awards also show attention to organizations linking housing and employment with broader human services. Project for Pride in Living received $1.383 million in 2023 and $1.3 million in 2024, while Summit Academy received $600,000 in 2023, $625,000 in 2024, and $800,000 in 2025. These grants sit alongside support for groups such as Neighborhood Development Company, Twin Cities Rise, and Every Meal, all within a local Minnesota grantmaking pattern.
Workforce and technical education is a visible part of the foundation’s portfolio. Dunwoody College of Technology received $3.3 million in 2024 for human services, following a $1 million grant in 2023. Veterans’ housing and support services are another major theme. Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans was awarded $1.25 million in 2023, $1.25 million in 2024, and $1 million in 2025, showing sustained backing across multiple years. Housing and anti-poverty work appear in grants to organizations serving residents with layered needs. Project for Pride in Living received $1.383 million in 2023 and $1.3 million in 2024, while Alliance Housing Corporation received $255,000 in 2023. The foundation also supports food access and community-serving institutions. Every Meal received $500,000 in 2024, and Second Harvest Heartland received $250,000 in 2025.
Typical grant size is tightly clustered around $25,000 to $50,000, with a p25 of $25,000, median of $25,000, and p75 of $50,000. The recent grants list shows a different upper tier as well: several awards reach $1 million or more, indicating a mix of small standard grants and much larger targeted commitments. Recipients appear across multiple years, especially Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, Project for Pride in Living, Summit Academy, and Twin Cities Rise. The foundation does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments.
