The Hundt Family Foundation concentrates its giving on a small number of sizable, strategic grants to higher-education institutions, public-interest media, and climate/clean-energy advocacy. It favors established universities and centers (including law programs) and provides targeted support to organizations working on climate finance and investigative journalism. Grants are national in scope but include support for specific campuses and programs.
A concentrated portfolio of relatively few, large grants with several repeat recipients—strategic, high-dollar support rather than many small donations.
A $111,032 unrestricted grant to Coalition for Green Capital stands out in The Hundt Family Foundation Inc’s recent record and helps define its mix of climate finance, higher education, and public-interest media support. The foundation’s largest awards are not spread broadly; they cluster around institutions and organizations that can deploy general support across a campus, legal program, advocacy effort, or newsroom. Yale University appears twice in the recent grants list at $50,000 in 2024 and $50,000 in 2025, while other larger grants went to the University of Hawaii, ProPublica, and Jacksonville University. That pattern points to a funder that favors established organizations with a clear institutional role rather than project-by-project microgrants. The grant descriptions repeatedly use general support or unrestricted general support, suggesting flexibility in how recipients use the funds. Across the list, the foundation backs university-based programs, law-school funds, climate finance advocacy, and investigative journalism, with additional grants to schools and civic organizations. Its recent activity is national in reach, but it is selective in where it concentrates higher-dollar support.
Higher education is one of the clearest themes in the recent grants list. The foundation gave $75,000 to the Uc Berkley Foundation - the Berkeley Law Fund for general support, $70,000 to the University of Hawaii for general support, and $25,000 to Jacksonville University for general support. Yale University also received $50,000 in 2024 and another $50,000 in 2025. Public-interest media is another visible area: Pro Publica received $30,000 in 2025 for general support, and The American Prospect received $1,000 in 2025. Climate and clean-energy work appears through Coalition for Green Capital, which received multiple awards including $111,032 in 2023 and additional grants in 2024 and 2025. The list also includes civic and education-oriented support such as National Cathedral School, Washington School for Girls, and Consumers for Dental Choice.
Typical grants are modest to mid-sized, with a p25 of $1,000, a median of $5,000, and a p75 of $12,500. The foundation’s recent record shows both one-time and repeated support: Coalition for Green Capital, Yale University, First Amendment Coalition, Consumers for Dental Choice, National Cathedral School, Vassar College Class of 1969, and Alliant Education Fund all appear in more than one year. Grant descriptions are mostly general support or unrestricted general support, indicating flexible funding rather than tightly restricted project awards. The foundation is a private family foundation, not an individual-giving vehicle, and it does not make program-related investments.
