The foundation concentrates large, repeat grants in the New York metropolitan area with a clear interest in Jewish anti-poverty work and family-directed charitable initiatives. Half of its recorded giving falls into the philanthropy/intermediary category, and the remaining visible support goes to an established Jewish social-service agency, indicating a focused, locally oriented charitable strategy. Grants are few but large and often recurring, suggesting sustained partnership with a small set of recipients, including an internal family project.
Concentrated giving: a small number of large, repeat grants (multi-grant relationships) primarily in the NY metro area, split between an external Jewish social-service agency and the family’s own/affiliated charitable project.
The Henry & Carolyn Sue Orenstein Foundation C/o Carolyn Sue Orenstein shows a strong pattern of repeat support for Jewish anti-poverty work in the New York metropolitan area, with especially large commitments to the Metro NY Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty and the Orenstein Project in Tel Aviv. The Metro NY Coordinating Council received a $2.5 million grant in 2023 and $1 million grants in both 2024 and 2025, while the Orenstein Project received $1.5 million in each of those three years. That repetition points to a small-circle grantmaking style built around sustained relationships rather than broad dispersion. The foundation’s visible giving also extends to Jewish campus work, local charitable efforts in New Jersey, and selected medical-need support. Within the record, grants are often made in the five-figure and seven-figure range, and some recipients appear year after year with similar purposes. The structure of the grant list suggests a funder that backs established institutions, family-directed charitable initiatives, and direct relief alongside Jewish communal priorities.
A clear theme is Jewish poverty relief and emergency assistance. In 2023, the foundation gave $2.5 million to the Metro NY Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty in New York for charitable purposes, followed by $1 million grants in 2024 and 2025. Another recurring line of support is the Orenstein Project in Tel Aviv, which received $1.5 million in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The foundation also funded Jewish campus activity: Chabad on Campus International Foundation in Brooklyn received $85,000 in 2024 and $60,000 in 2025. Smaller grants show support for community institutions and local organizations, including Beth Hamedrash Anshei H'rubishov in Brooklyn and a rescue squad in Verona, New Jersey.
Typical grant size is $6,000 at the 25th percentile, $10,000 at the median, and $42,316 at the 75th percentile, even though the record also includes several very large multi-year commitments. The grant list shows repeated recipients across 2023, 2024, and 2025, especially for the same charitable purposes, which points to ongoing support rather than one-time gifts. The foundation does not fund individuals broadly, but the record includes medical-expense payments for named individuals as part of a means-tested relief pattern. The legal name indicates a family foundation structure tied to Carolyn Sue Orenstein.
