The Erteszek Foundation concentrates its giving in Southwest Colorado with sizable, unrestricted support to local institutions. Its largest and repeat recipient is Fort Lewis College, and it also channels funds through the regional community foundation to support broader local needs. The foundation appears focused on place-based philanthropic support rather than a wide variety of national causes.
Concentrated, small-portfolio giving: a few large grants rather than many small grants, including repeat funding to a single higher-education institution and a pass-through to a regional community foundation.
The Erteszek Foundation’s largest recent gifts go to Fort Lewis College Foundation, with $50,000 in both 2023 and 2025 for support of charitable mission. That repeat pattern is a clear marker of how the foundation operates: place-based, mission-level support tied to Southwest Colorado institutions rather than a broad national portfolio. Across the recent grants list, the foundation also uses the regional community foundation as a vehicle for local support, signaling interest in both direct institutional giving and pooled community capacity. Its recent awards include $28,493 to The Community Foundation Serving the Southwest in Durango, along with additional grants to organizations in Durango, Bayfield, and the wider Four Corners region. The mix of recipients includes a college foundation, a community foundation, a play festival, a youth club, and local service organizations, all funded under the same charitable mission framing. Grant sizes cluster from modest operating support to six-figure-scale annual giving across the foundation’s portfolio, showing a consistent preference for flexible support rather than narrowly designated project funding.
Higher education is a visible priority. The foundation gave $50,000 to Fort Lewis College Foundation in 2025 for support of charitable mission, matching a $50,000 grant in 2023. That repeat commitment makes the college a central recipient in the foundation’s recent record. Local civic and cultural organizations also appear repeatedly. Durango Playfest received $15,000 in 2023 and $8,000 in 2025, both for support of charitable mission, while Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County Inc received $3,000 in 2025 after a $3,000 grant in 2023. The foundation also supports community infrastructure and public-interest groups. In 2025 it gave $4,000 to Pine River Shares in Bayfield, $3,334 to Ksut Piblic Radio in Ignacio, and $1,000 to Companeros Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center in Durango, each listed as support of charitable mission.
Typical grant size is $2,250 at the 25th percentile, $10,000 at the median, and $15,000 at the 75th percentile. The recent record shows repeat giving across multiple years to several recipients, including Fort Lewis College Foundation, The Community Foundation Serving the Southwest, Durango Playfest, and Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County. The foundation is a regular funder, not a DAF, and it makes no program-related investments or grants to individuals. Available awards are mostly structured as support of charitable mission, suggesting flexible general support rather than restricted project funding.
