The Charles T Bauer Charitable Foundation concentrates almost all of its philanthropy on education, favoring large, targeted gifts to schools and higher-education institutions. Its grants include multi-year or repeat support for a Baltimore private day school, major capital or programmatic gifts to research universities, and funding for hands-on workforce/education programs in the city. The foundation appears to prioritize institutional strengthening and student opportunity over many small community grants.
The Charles T Bauer Charitable Foundation’s recent giving is anchored by a $1,000,000 general-support grant to Roland Park Country School Inc in Baltimore. That scale fits a pattern of large, institution-level gifts rather than many small awards. The foundation repeatedly backs schools, universities, and related education providers, with recurring support for Baltimore-area institutions and several sizable grants to higher-education partners outside Maryland. In the latest grants, Johns Hopkins University received $710,000 in 2023 and another $200,000 in 2025, while Bucknell University was awarded $600,000 in 2025 after prior support of $400,000 and $200,000 in 2023. Baltimore-based education and youth-serving organizations also appear regularly, including Living Classrooms, Boys Latin School of Maryland, and Kennedy Krieger Foundation. The foundation’s grantmaking also reaches beyond core K–12 and college support into a named medical and aging-related initiative at Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University. Overall, the pattern points to a funder that favors established institutions, large general-support commitments, and repeated relationships over one-time, narrowly restricted awards.
Education is the clearest thread in the foundation’s grantmaking. It gave $313,750 in 2025 to Boys Latin School of Maryland Inc for general support, and it supported St Paul’s School for Girls with $200,000 in 2025. Roland Park Country School Inc also received a $500,000 grant in 2023 and a $1,000,000 grant in 2025. The foundation also funds higher education and research institutions. Johns Hopkins Medicine received $200,000 in 2025 for general support, while Johns Hopkins University received $200,000 in 2025 for the Women’s Wellness & Healthy Aging Program and general support. In another area, it backed community-based learning and enrichment through $547,750 to Living Classrooms in 2025. It has also supported science and student-facing educational infrastructure through Irvine Natural Science Center Inc, with $250,000 in 2023 and $250,000 in 2025, plus an additional $120,000 in 2025.
Typical grants are sizable: the foundation’s grant-size distribution shows a p25 of $47,500, a median of $89,600, and a p75 of $150,000. Many awards cluster well above six figures, and several recipients appear more than once across 2023 and 2025, indicating repeated relationships rather than isolated gifts. The foundation does not fund individuals and does not make program-related investments. The recent grants listed are all general support except one named Johns Hopkins University award tied to a program and general support.
