The Carol Moss Foundation concentrates its philanthropy on biomedical research—particularly cancer research and COVID-19 protections for vulnerable patients—while also supporting disability services tied to vision loss and local animal welfare programs. Its portfolio is dominated by large, targeted grants to major medical centers and repeat support for a national guide-dog organization, indicating a mix of high-impact research funding and service-oriented operational support.
The Carol Moss Foundation’s largest recent grant was a $1,000,000 award to City of Hope for general and unrestricted support, a sign that the foundation is willing to make major commitments when it sees institutional priorities it wants to back. Across the recent record, its giving shows a clear tilt toward biomedical work, especially cancer research and protections for cancer patients during COVID-19, alongside support for guide-dog services, nutrition programs, veteran support, and animal welfare. That combination points to a funder that pairs large medical grants with practical service grants for people and animals in everyday care systems. The medical side is anchored by repeat support for major California health institutions. City of Hope appears again with a 2023 grant for protecting cancer patients from SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 disease, while Cedars-Sinai Medical Center received funding for metastatic cancer research. Outside medicine, the foundation has also backed organizations serving blind and visually impaired people, veteran-related services, and local animal rescue and care programs. The result is a portfolio that mixes high-dollar institutional philanthropy with targeted community support.
Cancer-related grantmaking is the most visible thread. The Carol Moss Foundation gave $500,000 to City of Hope in 2023 for protecting cancer patients from the harm of infection by SARS-CoV2 and COVID-19 disease, and $300,000 to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for BOG Innovation to Impact Campaign - Metastatic Cancer Research. Those gifts show support for both patient protection and research. The foundation also funds disability and mobility services. Guide Dogs for the Blind Inc. received $200,000 in 2024 for the Orientation and Mobility Immersion Program (O&MI) and another $200,000 in 2025 for general and unrestricted support. On the nutrition side, St Vincent Senior Citizen Nutrition Program Inc. received $150,000 in 2024 for the Bone Appetit program and Meals on Wheels, followed by $100,000 in 2025 for general and unrestricted support. Animal welfare is another recurring area, including a $220,000 grant to Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation for full-time grooming and Dream Come True programs.
Typical grant size is modest relative to the largest awards: the p25 is $1,000, the median is $2,500, and the p75 is $23,750. That spread suggests a portfolio with many smaller gifts and a smaller number of very large commitments. The recent record also shows repeat recipients across multiple years, including City of Hope, Guide Dogs for the Blind Inc., Feeding Pets of the Homeless, Stray Cat Alliance, Puppy Rescue Mission, Paws for Life K9 Rescue, Food Finders Inc., St Vincent Senior Citizen Nutrition Program Inc., Angel City Pit Bulls, Kitten Rescue, and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. The foundation funds individuals and does not make program-related investments. The grant record provided does not describe an application process.
