The Bunting Family Foundation concentrates very large, local gifts to two mission-driven organizations in the Baltimore/Chesapeake region: one focused on Chesapeake Bay conservation and one on Catholic social services. Their giving suggests place-based philanthropy that balances environmental restoration with faith-based community care, favoring substantial unrestricted support to established regional institutions.
Highly concentrated: very few but very large grants, split between repeat/anchor-style support for established regional organizations rather than many small grants.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Catholic Charities - Baltimore
The Bunting Family Foundation C/o Knollwood Investment Advisory stands out for its large, repeated support of Chesapeake Bay conservation and Catholic social services, with major gifts landing again and again in Maryland institutions. The single largest recent grant in the data was $1,055,624 to Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis for furthering the organization’s exempt purpose, a clear signal that environmental restoration is a core concern. On the human-services side, Catholic Charities - Baltimore appears repeatedly in the recent grants list, including grants of $963,718 in 2024, $600,000 in 2023, and $400,000 in 2023, showing sustained backing for Baltimore-area poverty relief and related services. The foundation also extends substantial support beyond those two anchors, including gifts to Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Banner, Johns Hopkins University, and University of Maryland Baltimore County. The pattern suggests a regional funder making sizable, often unrestricted grants to established organizations rather than a broad, application-driven portfolio. Across the recent grants shown, the emphasis is on mission support for institutions tied to the Baltimore-Chesapeake region.
Environmental work is a major theme in the recent grants data. In 2024 and 2025, the foundation gave Chesapeake Conservancy $280,000 and $220,829, both described as furthering the organization’s exempt purpose, reinforcing a Chesapeake Bay and waterways focus. It also supported Save the Sound with $190,000 in 2024 and $175,000 in 2025, extending that environmental interest beyond Maryland. Catholic social services are another clear strand: Catholic Charities - Baltimore received $230,000 in 2025, adding to multiple larger gifts in earlier years. The foundation also made a $250,000 grant to Franciscan Center in 2023, another Baltimore-based organization tied to poverty relief. Beyond those cause areas, the data shows support for civic and cultural institutions, including a $500,000 grant to Baltimore Banner in 2023 and a $506,423 grant to Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 2025.
Typical grant size sits at $10,000 at the 25th percentile, $20,000 at the median, and $50,000 at the 75th percentile, but the recent-grants list shows that the foundation also makes much larger institutional gifts. The pattern is recurring rather than one-off: Catholic Charities - Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University, Chesapeake Conservancy, and B&o Railroad Museum each appear in multiple years. The foundation is classified as a regular funder, not an individual-giving vehicle, and it does not make program-related investments. Most grants are described with the standard purpose language “to further the exempt purpose of the organization,” indicating broad operating or mission support rather than narrowly specified project funding.
