The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation is a culturally focused funder that primarily supports Swedish arts, heritage, and Swedish‑American cultural exchange. Its grants concentrate on performing arts (opera, theatre, music), museums and exhibitions, cultural education and language immersion, and institutions that sustain Swedish cultural life both in Sweden and in the U.S. Many grants are multi-year or repeated to the same organizations and often underwrite specific seasons, exhibitions, festivals, scholarships, or capital projects.
A large share of The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation’s recent giving is directed to Swedish cultural institutions and Swedish-American exchange groups, with repeated support for seasons, exhibitions, and education projects. In the latest grant list, it backed Stiftelsen Drottningholms Slottsteater for a court-theater orchestra performance and concert season, and gave to The American Scandinavian Foundation for general support. Other sizable awards went to Stiftelsen Lilla Akademien, Millesgarden, and Stiftelsen Kulturcentrum Ljusnarsberg, showing a pattern of support for music training, museum work, and opera programming. The foundation also funds projects that tie contemporary cultural life to heritage institutions. Recent grants supported Prinsessan Estelles Kulturstiftelse for an art education project, the Sixten Ehrling Conducting Center at Malmö University, and Renovation of the ASI Carriage House at the American Swedish Institute. Its portfolio includes both general support and tightly defined project grants, often attached to a season, exhibition, performance cycle, or specific facility need. The grant list shows continued attention to organizations in Sweden and the United States, especially those working in opera, museums, language, and Swedish cultural exchange.
Performing arts are a core part of the foundation’s work. It gave $100,000 to Stiftelsen Kulturcentrum Ljusnarsberg for the 2023 season at Opera på Skäret, and $80,000 to Stiftelsen Drottningholms Slottsteater for the orchestra performance and concert season 2023. It also supported Ulriksdals Slottsteater Confidencen with both season funding and general support. Museum and exhibition work is another clear strand. The foundation gave $75,000 to Stiftelsen Nordiska Museet to display paintings by August Strindberg and fresco sketches by Carl Larson in the new permanent exhibition, Nordbor. It also supported Moderna Museet and Millesgarden with general support. Education and exchange appear through grants such as $100,000 to Concordia Language Villages for general support and $95,000 to Malmo Universitet for the Sixten Ehrling Conducting Center. The American-Scandinavian Foundation also received multiple general-support grants.
