About Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission

Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission’s largest recent grant was $3,424,611 for Maine Economic Recovery Grants, a statewide response tied to pandemic-related economic recovery. That award is a useful window into how the commission works: it administers public funding, routes support through regional programs, and serves local governments, nonprofits, and small businesses across its service area. In 2023, another major grant of $340,000 went to Micro Loan Grants under Community Development Block Grants, showing continued use of public funds for business support. The commission also moved transportation dollars, including $178,818 to York County Community Action Corporation for demand-response public transportation services. Those grants fit a broader pattern of direct service delivery and public infrastructure support, with funding aimed at practical community needs rather than broad unrestricted giving. Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission’s role is closely tied to planning, economic development, and implementation work, especially in Southern Maine towns and county-level programs. Its grantmaking is shaped by its function as a regional development commission rather than a traditional philanthropic foundation.

It also administered the Economic Recovery Hub Program, a 2023–2025 grant and technical assistance effort for small businesses and nonprofits in York and Southern Oxford Counties. In business support, the commission gave $340,000 to Micro Loan Grants under Community Development Block Grants, extending forgivable lending and related support to local enterprises. Transportation is another active area: the commission awarded $178,818 to York County Community Action Corporation for demand-response public transportation services, aligning with its focus on transportation access and mobility.

How Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission Gives

The typical grant size is $259,409 at the 25th percentile, $340,000 at the median, and $1,882,306 at the 75th percentile, which points to relatively large awards.
