The Sara & Yasuo Kuniyoshi Foundation concentrates almost exclusively on the visual and performing arts, providing unrestricted operating support to museums, artist organizations, and cultural institutions. Grants are often repeated to the same institutions and skew toward established art organizations in New York and New England, with several mid-sized gifts to support general operations rather than project-specific funding. The foundation’s giving profile suggests a strong personal or geographic interest in sustaining artist communities and major cultural anchors.
Concentrated, repeat support to a small portfolio of arts organizations; primarily unrestricted operating grants of mid-size amounts, focused on cultural institutions in New York and New England.
The Sara & Yasuo Kuniyoshi Foundation’s recent giving is anchored by repeated unrestricted support for the Art Students League of New York, including $20,000 grants in 2023, 2024, and 2025. That pattern points to a funder that favors sustained operating support over one-time project funding, especially for institutions tied to artist training and the visual arts. Across the recent grants list, the foundation also backs museums, artist organizations, and performing arts institutions, with $10,000 to the Archive of American Art and $5,000 grants to organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, New England Conservatory of Music, and Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The grants are consistently described as unrestricted, which suggests flexibility in how recipients use the funds. Repeated awards to the same institutions also indicate a preference for continuity in its relationships with grantees. The overall pattern is small-to-mid-sized support for established cultural organizations rather than a broad mix of fields or program-specific awards.
In artist training, the foundation gave $20,000 to The Art Students League of New York in 2025 for an unrestricted grant, continuing a multi-year pattern with the same institution. It also supported Woodstock Artist Assoc & Museum with $5,000 grants in 2023, 2024, and 2025, pointing to interest in artist-run spaces and local arts communities. Preservation and art history appear as another theme: the Archive of American Art received $10,000 in 2023 and additional $5,000 grants in 2024 and 2025. Performing arts are represented through $5,000 grants to the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2023, 2024, and 2025, plus $5,000 to New England Conservatory of Music in 2023. Museum support is part of the profile as well, including $5,000 to Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2023.
Grant sizes are tightly clustered: p25, median, and p75 are all $5,000, even though the foundation made one larger $20,000 award and a $10,000 award in the recent list. The pattern is highly repeat-oriented, with several recipients appearing in multiple years rather than one-off gifts. The grants are described as unrestricted, including unrestricted operating support and unrestricted grants. With annual grants of $145,000 and total assets of $438,423, the foundation appears to make a limited number of carefully repeated awards rather than many small one-time grants.
