The Ruth and Joseph C. Reed Foundation for The Arts concentrates its giving on local visual arts institutions, with a clear emphasis on supporting the American Museum of Ceramic Art. Grants are sizable and directed toward museum/program support, indicating a preference for sustaining exhibition, collections, and institutional capacity in the ceramics and broader visual-arts space in their region.
Highly concentrated: few, large grants focused on repeat support to the same arts institutions (multi-grant funding cycles rather than many small gifts).
The Ruth and Joseph C Reed Foundation for The Arts has built a clear pattern around Southern California arts education, with repeated support for the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona and other visual-arts organizations. The largest recent grant in the file is $90,000 to American Museum of Ceramic Art in 2025 for the arts, and the same institution also received $80,000 in 2024. That repetition points to a funder that sustains specific museums over time rather than moving broadly across the arts field. Alongside museum support, the foundation gives to organizations that deliver hands-on arts experiences and training for school-age students, especially in underserved and at-risk communities. Recent recipients include Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, Art Creativity for Healing in Laguna, and Focus on the Masters in Ventura, showing a mix of museum, education, and community-facing arts grants. The foundation’s support also reaches a range of visual-arts institutions across Southern California, including places tied to exhibitions, collections, and program delivery. Its grantmaking is local in scope and entirely concentrated in California, with grants awarded to organizations in cities such as Pomona, Ventura, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara.
Arts education is a central theme. The foundation gave $30,500 to Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village in 2025 and $17,871 to Visual Arts Design Academy in Santa Barbara in both 2023 and 2024, reflecting support for school-age learning and training. It also backs community arts programs. Art Creativity for Healing in Laguna received $27,150 in 2023 and 2024, plus $20,000 in 2024 and 2025, tying the funder to repeated support for arts-based healing work. Museum and exhibition support is another clear area. Focus on the Masters in Ventura received $20,000 in 2024 and 2025, while the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale received $15,000 in 2024. These grants show a focus on sustaining arts organizations that present work to the public and build institutional capacity.
Typical grants are tightly clustered: the 25th percentile is $10,000, and both the median and 75th percentile are $15,000. That suggests a core grant size around the mid-teens, with larger awards reserved for a smaller number of recipients. The recent-grants list also shows repeat giving to the same organizations across multiple years, including American Museum of Ceramic Art, Art Creativity for Healing, Focus on the Masters, and Visual Arts Design Academy. The foundation is a regular funder rather than a donor-advised fund, and it makes grants to organizations rather than individuals. An active Letter of Intent process is listed for some grant programs, and unsolicited submissions are accepted.
