The Rupert H Johnson Jr Foundation concentrates its giving on healthcare and medical innovation, coupled with support for interfaith collaboration and higher education. Major gifts favor regional health institutions and leading medical research organizations, while recurring grants to a few nonprofits suggest ongoing strategic partnerships. The foundation also funds faith‑based peacebuilding and a mix of universities and disaster relief organizations.
Concentrated, relatively large grants focused on a small set of repeat grantees; multi-grant relationships to regional healthcare providers and national medical research organizations, with occasional gifts to faith‑based and higher education institutions.
The Rupert H Johnson Jr Foundation Rupert H Johnson Jr Trustee’s recent giving is anchored by repeated support for Mills Peninsula Hospital Foundation in Burlingame, including a $500,000 grant in 2023 and $200,000 grants in 2024 and 2025. That pattern points to a funder that sustains a small set of organizations over time rather than spreading gifts broadly. Healthcare and medical innovation are central, but the foundation also backs interfaith cooperation, higher education, and humanitarian response. In the medical area, it has supported Focused Ultrasound Foundation and Mayo Clinic, signaling interest in noninvasive treatment and research-oriented institutions. The foundation’s portfolio also includes long-running support for United Religions Initiative in San Francisco and several universities, among them Santa Clara University, Norwich University, UC Davis, and Harvard Radcliffe Institute. Within its recent grant list, the foundation appears to favor charitable support that can be directed toward operating needs or general institutional purposes. The overall picture is of a regional funder with multiple ongoing relationships, especially in health care and education, and a clear emphasis on organizations that can absorb repeated unrestricted gifts.
In healthcare, the foundation backed Mills Peninsula Hospital Foundation for charitable support with $500,000 in 2023 and $200,000 in both 2024 and 2025. It also gave $200,000 to Mayo Clinic in 2025 and multiple $200,000 grants to Focused Ultrasound Foundation across 2023, 2024, and 2025, tying its medical giving to research and treatment innovation. Interfaith and peacebuilding work is another clear line of support: United Religion Intiative received $200,000 grants in 2023, 2024, and 2025. In higher education, the foundation has funded Santa Clara University, Norwich University, Harvard Radcliff Institute, UC Davis, Washington and Lee University, Hardin Simmons University, Standford University, and the University of San Francisco through charitable support grants.
Typical grants cluster at $10,000 at the 25th percentile, $25,000 at the median, and $50,000 at the 75th percentile, even though the recent list also includes six-figure awards. The foundation’s recent record shows repeated support to the same organizations across multiple years, including Mills Peninsula Hospital Foundation, United Religion Intiative, Focused Ultra Sound Foundation, Santa Clara University, Norwich University, Harvard Radcliff Institute, and UC Davis. That pattern suggests ongoing relationships rather than isolated awards. The foundation is not listed as funding individuals and does not make program-related investments. Its grants appear to be responsive charitable support, often structured as unrestricted or general operating funding.
